Premier League giants Chelsea completed the signing of Bayer Leverkusen Star Kai Havertz for a hefty fee of £72 million. This signing broke the club’s previous record transfer—the £71.6 million paid for paid for Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2018.

In addition to the initial fee, the Blues could end up owing a further £18 million depending on team performance-related installments. This will see the club’s spending exceed £200 million this summer.

While Havertz has not yet arrived at Stamford Bridge, Leverkusen manager Peter Bosz has come to terms with the German 21-year-old’s departure from the BayArena. Bosz explained, “I don’t expect Kevin Volland and Kai Havertz to train with us again. It is possible that other players will also change. We definitely need to bring in players.”

In order to make up for the significant void that Havertz will leave at the club, Leverkusen has agreed on a £25 million price tag for Roma forward Patrick Schick. The club reportedly beat RB Leipzig in a race to sign the Czech Republic international.

Now with the transfer of Kai Havertz in the bag, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard turns his focus to Rennes goalkeeper Eduoard Mendy.

According to Chelsea’s technical and performance advisor, Petr Cech, Mendy should prove to be a suitable alternative to first-choice keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
