The Cleveland Cavaliers have reportedly decided that center Andre Drummond will no longer play for the team as they actively look to trade him before the league’s March 25th trade deadline.

Drummond, who was acquired by Cleveland in a trade last February, is in the last year of a five-year contract and does not figure into Cleveland’s plans as they move forward in 2021.

The former Pistons star has been productive this season, averaging 17.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game on 47% shooting for the 10-18 Cavs. As the team looks to make an unlikely playoff run, they have decided that they prefer to deal him away to acquire future assets.

The decision not to play Drummond has to do with the team’s acquisition of Jarrett Allen earlier this season. Since they view him as their starting center of the future, they’ve decided that they prefer to give him playing time as they work to ship Drummond out.

Trade rumors have placed the Toronto Raptors as a possible destination for the 27-year-old big man, but the team will have more than a month left to find the best possible deal for the two-time All-Star as they continue to look to rebuild.

Cleveland Cavaliers center Andre Drummond is well aware of the trade rumors surrounding him in recent weeks. But he isn’t letting these speculations affect his game.

Drummond delivered his best performance in a Cavaliers’ jersey Sunday night, leading the team to a 106-103 win against the New York Knicks. The 27-year-old star put up an impressive double-double with 33 points and 23 rebounds while adding three assists, two blocks, and two steals.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Drummond said that he doesn’t pay much attention to trade talk and that he’s just focused on playing basketball.

“I play the same way each and every night,” said Drummond. “The trade, it is what it is. There’s nothing I can do about that. If I do get traded, I don’t control that either. I’m just here to play basketball with whatever jersey I have on. That’s all I can focus on right now.”

Despite Andre Drummond’s fine form in recent games, the Cavaliers are believed to be highly-motivated to trade him before the February deadline.

The Cavs may not see him as a player for the future, since they recently acquired the talented Jarrett Allen from the Brooklyn Nets and will likely want to give him more playing time. Also, Drummond is on an expiring contract and could walk out for free in the summer.

However, if they want to move Drummond, Cleveland might have a hard time finding a market for him. He is currently owed $28.7 million for 2020-21 and there aren’t many teams that would be willing to take on that much money for a possible rental. The challenge with Drummond is also that he’s an old-school center whose skillset isn’t much appreciated in the modern NBA.

Center Andre Drummond stated on the Le Batard & Friends podcast on Tuesday that his intention is to exercise his player option for the 2020-21 season and play with the Cleveland Cavaliers for another year.

Drummond, who was traded from the Detroit Pistons to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a February trade, held an option for one more season at a rate of $28.75 million for next season which he could have declined to go to free agency.

The 26-year-old center, the 9th overall pick of the 2012 NBA Draft, has twice been named an All-Star and has won the NBA rebounding title three times, including the past two seasons.

While Drummond found success during his tenure in Detroit, he only has played in the playoffs twice. In both instances, his team was eliminated in the first round. Some might be surprised that he is going to spend another year of his prime with a non-competitive team like Cleveland, but the big payday was enough to get him to say yes to his player option.

Drummond, whose Cavs will not participate in the NBA’s final stage this summer, will instead report to training camp next all looking to put up big numbers and cash in for a big contract in summer 2021.

Multiple reports suggested in the past few days that Detroit Pistons are exploring trade possibilities for their star big-man Andre Drummond. According to media outlets like ESPN and The Athletic, Pistons have been talking with Atlanta Hawks and other teams about the possibility of moving Drummond, who can become a free agent in the summer. However, it turns out that the player himself isn’t keen on a move.

Drummond recently said that there are no doubts he wants to stay in Detroit when asked by the media to address the trade rumors.

“I’m not a quitter, for one,” Drummond said after Pistons’ 111-104 win over the Golden State Warriors. “I was never brought up to be a quitter. If I start somewhere, I try to finish there, try to complete the mission, which is to win a championship here. It will never be me that wants to go anywhere … I love being here. I would love to play here the rest of my career.”

This is a bit different from Drummond’s comments in the past when he said that he is looking forward to free agency and would like to explore his options. Such statements and the 26-year-old’s unwillingness to openly commit to Pistons made the organization cautious about losing the player for nothing in the free agency. Drummond has a $28 million contract option on his deal for 2019/20, which he can reject and become an unrestricted free agent.

Pistons’ asking price for Andre Drummond is still unknown but the rumors are that the team is looking for picks, expiring contracts and maybe a quality rotational player. Despite possibly being in the final year of his deal, Drummond could still get a team to check all those boxes in a trade offer. He is currently averaging 17.6 points, 15.8 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.

Detroit Pistons’ center Andre Drummond has a $28.7 million contract option for 2020/21 NBA season, but it seems like he won’t be opting into it. During a recent chat with reporters after Osgood Shoot-out game, Drummond hinted that he will be exploring the free-agent market next summer.

“I’m a free agent next summer,” – Drummond said after a reporter brought up his contract situation.

The 26-year-old All-Star also shared that he is excited about this opportunity.

“Yeah, it should be fun,” – he added. “I’m excited. I think I’m the only one that has a big contract coming up for the year.”

The free agency comments caused quite big confusion among Pistons’ fans, so Drummond later decided to clarify them on Instagram. He said that he is excited to go through the process of being a free agent since he never been one, but that this doesn’t mean he is thinking about leaving Detroit.

Since 2020 class of free agents will be one of the weaker ones in recent years, Andre Drummond could stand out as one of the marquee targets for many teams if he puts up a productive season. Drummond averaged a career-high 17.3 points per game last season while also leading the league in rebounds with 15.6.
