]]>The 76ers outscored the Nets in each of the four quarters, being led by their All-Star duo James Harden and Joel Embiid. Harden, playing against his old team, scored 23 points and dished 13 assists, while Embiid added 26 points. Forward Tobias Harris also did his part with 21 points on 9-14 shooting.
The Nets’ game plan focused on limiting Emiid, the favorite for this year’s NBA MVP award, and challenging other Philly players to beat them. But it turned out the 76ers were ready for this.
“We worked on it all week,” said 76ers’ head coach Doc Rivers after the game. “I give Joel credit, because I thought especially early he was patient and we sold that to him. You are going to wind up with whatever amount of points no matter what happens. And that happened.”
Brooklyn saw the biggest contribution for Mikal Bridges, who scored game-high 30 points. Bridges was actually drafted by the 76ers out of Villanova in 2018 but ended up being traded to the Phoenix Suns on draft night.
The 76ers and the Nets will square off again on Monday night in Game 2 at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center.

]]>Simmons had his knee flare up during practice recently, forcing him to miss the Nets’ first two games after the All-Star break. While Brooklyn didn’t provide more details about Simmons’ condition, the player himself hinted that he could be out for an extended time.
“We’re going to reevaluate it in about a week and see where I’m at,” Simmons said via the New York Post. “There’s some targets I need to hit and get to.”
Simmons also opened up about his frustrations with the injuries that limited him to just 42 games and 26.3 minutes per game in 2022-23.
“I’ve been battling it all year. I haven’t been 100 percent all year,” he added. “I just want to be on the court, regardless of what it is and whatever position I have. I’m just trying to give the team what I can.”
When he was able to play, Simmons struggled to make the significant impact that the Nets envisioned when they acquired him as part of James Harden trade with the Philadelphia 76ers. The three-time All-Star showed that he is still a valuable defensive presence but has struggled on the offensive side of the ball, averaging only 6.9 points throughout the campaign.

]]>Simmons, who has missed 11 games to date this season due to multiple injury setbacks, left the game in the third quarter after what was a disappointing night for him. He went 0-for-3 with seven assists, one rebound, and three turnovers before leaving the court.
Forward T.J. Warren departed the game midway through the fourth quarter when he suffered a left knee contusion. Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said after the game that it remains unclear whether Simmons and Warren would be in need of an MRI scan following their injuries.
Warren and Simmons’ injuries are the latest in an extended list of injury setbacks for the Nets this season. Star forward Kevin Durant remains unavailable for at least a few more weeks as he continues to battle an MCL sprain in his right knee, while Seth Curry was unavailable for the Pistons game after he experienced right knee soreness.
It remains unclear whether Simmons or Warren would be available for the Nets’ next outing against the New York Knicks.

]]>Having missed out on 11 games so far this season due to injury setbacks, Simmons was ejected due to arguing with referee Eric Lewis. With just 8:47 left in the third quarter, Simmons was called out by Lewis for what was his fifth foul of the game.
Nets coach Jacque Vaughn expressed his concerns over Simmons’ conduct during the game as well as his struggle to recover his form. “We need him to be productive, and that is without the fouls,” Vaughn explained. “That is helping us rebound the basketball. That is playing with poise and composure. That is pushing the pace for us.”
When questioned about his on-court antics, Simmons refused to go into detail, instead choosing to remain silent out of fear of picking up a fine. So far this season, Simmons has averaged 7.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 6.3 assists.

]]>While all of the Nets players aside from the injured Kevin Durant emerged fit from Saturday’s training session, coach Jacque Vaughn reminded that Simmons’ back problems are tricky to navigate and easily aggravated.
“He went through warmups, felt some tightness,” Vaughn commented. “So that was the report I had, and then he was a late scratch. He’ll be on the trip with us, so hopefully, it’s one game.”
The Nets are about to embark on a five-game road trip starting with a game against the San Antonio Spurs. While the team sits second in the Eastern Conference, the Nets will have to cope without Simmons nor key player Durant in the squad.
Simmons has missed 11 games this season as a result of various injuries, including when he needed time to recover after undergoing back surgery during the offseason. His numerous injury concerns have prevented him from finding consistency this season. Simmons grabbed 13 assists and nine rebounds during his last appearance during the 109-98 loss to the Boston Celtics on Friday.

]]>Durant picked up his injury during the third quarter of the Nets’ 102-101 victory over the Miami Heat on Sunday night when Heat player Jimmy Butler fell back onto Durant’s knee after his shot was blocked by Ben Simmons. While Durant got up after a few seconds and appeared to attempt to play on, the Nets called a time-out 30 seconds later, during which Durant was taken out of the game.
In January 2021, Durant injured the MCL in his left knee, leading to him missing six weeks of action. He also missed over a month in 2017 due to a sprained MCL and a tibial bone bruise.
Durant will leave a big gap in the Nets’ roster during his absence, having averaged 30 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists this season, thereby being included in the conversation for this season’s MVP.

]]>Nets coach Jacque Vaughn confirmed that an MRI revealed a new knee issue for Simmons. “It’s the knee, but the back of the knee,” Vaughn stated after the Nets’ 107-113 win over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday. “He was grabbing his knee during the game and said he needed to come out. It ended up being the back of the knee, so it’s the upper part of the calf.”
Simmons left Monday’s 102-109 win over the Orlando Magic early after suffering pain derived from what appeared to be the same knee issue. This comes after the player underwent back surgery during the offseason.
Joining Simmons on the sidelines is Yuta Watanabe, who will miss at least another week as he continues to battle a right hamstring strain. Having last played on November 20, Watanabe’s hopes of a smooth recovery were dashed when an MRI on Monday revealed results “consistent” with the first test.

]]>Simmons had to leave the game after experiencing pain in his left knee; the latest flare-up in what has been an ongoing knee problem for the player. Wednesday’s clash with the Wizards will be the seventh game that Simmons has missed this season through injury.
“We’ve got to play smaller—he’s one of our bigs out there,” teammate Kevin Durant commented when asked about changes that will have to be made to the team in Simmons’ absence. “So I thought Coach did a good job of trying to pick out the small lineup on the fly. We got to play a little faster, and I think we all got to do a good job of gang rebounding, doing the little stuff when he’s not out there.”
Yuta Watanabe also remains unavailable for the Wizards game as he continues to battle a right hamstring strain.

]]>Simmons missed the past four NBA games due to experiencing soreness in his left knee. The Australian player underwent an MRI last week, but while the test came back clean, he needed to get his knee drained and was unable to play in the Nets’ first two road games of the season.
With an average of 6.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 7.3 assists in six games, Simmons attributed his slow start to the season to the knee injury along with his rehabilitation after undergoing back surgery during the offseason.
The 26-year-old player claims that the knee injury could be connected to his back injury, adding that he will continue to work on recovering from both injuries.

]]>While the Nets are not seeking draft compensation for the suspended Boston Celtics coach, there are further discussions to be had before the deal can be concluded by the parties involved.
Brooklyn is looking to Udoka to improve on recent results and revive what has been a reeling franchise riddled by internal turmoil; issues that led to the dismissal of former coach Steve Nash. Currently, the Nets have a 2-6 record this season, putting them third from the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.
Previously an assistant at the Nets under Nash during the 2020-21 season, Udoka served as head coach of the Boston Celtics for the 2021-22 season before he was suspended before training camp due to what was defined as an improper relationship with a subordinate. Despite his suspension, the Celtics have not stood in the way of Udoka seeking out another job.
Udoka enjoyed a prosperous season with the Celtics, leading them to the NBA Finals.
