Australian tennis player Ashleigh Barty has confirmed that she will not be participating in this year’s US Open. The WTA world number one cited the risks of COVID-19 as her reason for skipping the New York-based Grand Slam.

“My team and I have decided that we won’t be travelling to the US for the Western and Southern Open and the US Open this year,” Barty explained.

“I love both events so it was a difficult decision but there are still significant risks involved due to COVID-19 and I don’t feel comfortable putting my team and I in that position. I wish the USTA all the best for the tournaments and look forward to being back in the US next year.”

She also confirmed that she will be contemplating over her participation in the French Open and the other WTA European tournaments within the next few weeks.

If Barty decides to participate in this year’s French Open, she will be given the chance to defend the title she won last year. The Australian won the 2019 Roland Garros title after defeating the likes of Madison Keyes and Andrea Petkovic en route to the final.

This year, the French Open brought the audience a really different, and might we say strange experience, surprising the fans with unexpected outcomes were the underdogs get to shine and creating stories that have the power to become legendary.

One of those stories will definitely be about Australian Ashleigh Barty’s miraculous comeback to the sport. The 23-year-old surprised everyone in 2014 when she decided to take a break from tennis to play professional cricket. She eventually returned to tennis after 17 months in early 2016 and has since won four tour titles, including the Miami Open in March, as well as the US Open women’s doubles title last year. And now she’s the first Australian to win the singles title in Roland Garros since Margaret Court’s victory in 1973.

This is also the first time that the Australian won a Grand Slam singles title, which makes her comeback even more miraculous. After the match she said that the French Open was a special place for Australian players and that she is incredibly proud of what she has been able to achieve, adding that she almost played the perfect match.

After a rescheduling of the match, Novak Djokovic finally met his Austrian adversary Dominic Thiem on the court in the French Open. But the match surprised Djokovic with an outcome that he wasn’t hoping for.

Thiem defeated Djokovic in a thrilling game during the semi-final and reserved his place in the final where he will be playing against the champion Rafael Nadal.

The 25-year-old Thiem managed to beat the world’s no.1 player Djokovic in five sets, finishing with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, 5-7 and 7-5, and stopping Djokovic on his way towards claiming all Grand Slam titles at the same time.

Before losing the match, the 32-year-old Serbian was on a winning streak of 26 matches. Djokovic showed frustration during the game, which led to him earning a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct because he argued with the chair umpire.

After the match, the tennis superstar said that the conditions he played in were the worst he had ever experienced. He also said that it’s hard to perform your best when you are playing in a hurricane-like weather condition.

This was Dominic Thiem’s first five-setter in Roland Garros and he called it “an epic match”.

This year’s French Open turned out to be a pretty surprising one, entertaining the audience with a lot of interesting moments and unexpected outcomes.

Many of the favorites had unexpectedly left the competition in its early stages and this trend continues to the last matches. In continuation of these interesting turnarounds, the Czech teenage professional tennis player Marketa Vondrousova surprised everyone with her stunning performance which kicked the British star Johanna Konta out of the competition.

The 19-year-old Vondrousova finished the match against Konta with 7-5 and 7-6 (2).

Because the game between Nadal and Federer was set to be played on Chatrier, the match between Konta and Vondrousova was moved to Court Simonne Mathieu, which caused a lot of reactions in the tennis community and from the players as well. Even though she said the court itself is beautiful, Konta also commented that playing in a half-empty stadium was not appropriate for a semi-final, and Federer joined her in her reaction about the late notice rescheduling.

In the meanwhile, the match between Ashleigh Barty and Amanda Inisimova took place on the Court Suzanne Lenglen and the Australian scored a victory with 6-7(4), 6-3 and 6-3.
