The post KC Royals “Don’t Have Any Intention” of Trading All-Star Catcher Salvador Perez appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>Speaking with reporters on Monday, Royals’ general manager J.J. Picollo confirmed that he received phone calls from teams interested in Perez. And he gave them all the same answer.
“We don’t have any intention of trading Salvy,” Picollo said.
“It’s not something we’re looking to do. But it doesn’t mean that teams won’t ask about him,” Picollo added.
The Royals are currently sitting at the bottom of AL Central at 18-48, currently the second-worst record in MLB. It is hard to imagine things will get any better for Kansas City, considering that they have lost their last seven games.
Salvador Perez inked a four-year, $82 million contract extension with the Royals in 2021 and is under team control through the 2025 campaign. It is unclear whether the 33-year-old has any wishes to leave the only franchise he knows.
Perez spent all of his 13 years in MLB with the Royals. He led the franchise to World Series win in 2015, winning the World Series MVP honors in the process. The Venezuela native also has seven All-Star nods on his resume.

]]>During his career with the Tampa Bays Rays, Yarbrough played a total of 127 games including 59 starts. During that time, he was 40-31 with a 4.33 ERA. Last season, Yarbrough was 3-8 with a 4.50 ERA.
Yarbrough struggled with injury last season, battling both a groin tightness and a strained oblique. Despite such setbacks, he was still able to appear in 20 games, including nine starts.
At 30 years old, Yarbrough has played five seasons in the MLB. During his rookie season in 2018, he was 2-0 with a 3.06 ERA in eight postseason games.
The left-hander is an alumn of Old Dominion, the school that new Royals manager Matt Quatraro and Kansas City infielder Vinnie Pasquantino also attended.
Following Yarbrough’s acquisition, the Royals decided to designate right-hander Wyatt Mills for assignment. Mills had a 4.60 ERA in 27 games with the Royals and the Seattle Mariners.

]]>The post Royals Fire Manager Mike Matheny After 3 Seasons appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>The Royals, which finished the regular season at the bottom of AL Central with 65-97 record, confirmed the decision late on Wednesday night on their official social media.
Matheny joined the Royals in 2020 with the goal to return the team to playoffs for the first time since World Series-winning run in 2015. However, the former St. Louis Cardinals catcher failed to turn things around during his three years with the franchise.
Matheny finishes his managerial stint in Kansas City with 165-219 overall record.
“Managing the Royals has been a true privilege,” Matheny said in a statement. ” … I came to the Royals knowing it was an organization of excellence and care, and was shown that care every single day. Royals fans should be excited about this group of players, and I look forward to watching them continue to grow.”
Before joining the Royals, Mike Matheny managed the Cardinals for six and a half years. He made the playoffs in each of his first four seasons in charge, with the run including three NL Central titles and a World Series appearance in 2013. Matheny was fired by St. Louis midway through 2018 season after 47–46 start of the season.

]]>Santana signed a two-year contract with the Kansas City Royals back in late 2020, reportedly worth $17.5 million. It’s been reported that they now agreed to send around $4.3 million to Seattle, leaving the Mariners to pay $1.5 million of the remainder of Santana’s contract.
Santana actually had a brief stint with the Mariners back in December 2018, but he didn’t stay there for too long. He was traded back to the Cleveland Indians ten days later, but the Mariners manager Scott Servais has spoken highly of him ever since.
“Every time I see Carlos, I joke with him about that, ‘You’re the favorite player I’ve ever managed.’ So he likes it and we have a good time with it. But obviously, he’s a tremendous clubhouse guy, really good teammate. Switch hitter. He gets on base as well as he ever has,” said Servais.
Following Santana’s exit, the Royals are promoting the newcomer Vinnie Pasquantino to the major leagues and including him in the active roster as their new first baseman.

]]>The post Royals All-Star Salvador Perez Breaks MLB Record appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>The previous record was held by Cincinnati Reds legend Johnny Bench. He had 45 homers during the 1970 MLB season while playing most of the games at the catcher position.
“It was unbelievable,” Perez said of his achievement.“I was thanking God for this. It’s amazing. And I said before, I never had hit 30 in my career. So I was looking for 30 and 100 RBIs. So this is a dream come true.”
This 46th homer also allowed Perez to get involved in the battle for overall MLB home run leader in 2021. The 31-year-old slugger is now tied with the Toronto Blue Jays phenom Vladimir Guerrero Jr, who also owns a 46 home runs tally at the moment. LA Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani is third on the list with 44.
The 2021 MLB season is shaping up to be historic for Salvador Perez in other ways as well. He currently leads the league in RBIs with 115 and is the first catcher since 1999 and Hall of Famer Mike Piazza to have that many. Perez also moved to the No. 2 spot on the Royals’ home run leaders list while having a shot at the franchise’s single-season record in home runs. He needs three more to beat Jorge Soler’s tally of 48 from 2019.

]]>Santana’s 2021 club option was declined by the Cleveland Indians after hitting only .199 with 8 home runs in 60 games during the pandemic-shortened season.
It did not take long for Santana to find suitors on the free agent market, and it ended up being a former division rival that presented him with the most attractive offer.
The Dominican slugger’s penchant for getting on base and hitting home runs has long been his calling card, and a Royals team desperately looking to upgrade its offense should be happy with their new acquisition if his production falls in line with his career norms.
The 2019 AL All-Star and Silver Slugger winner is just a year removed from a .281 campaign with 31 home runs, and the Royals will hope that he can step in at the first base position and provide them with production that they haven’t gotten ever since Eric Hosmer left for the San Diego Padres.
The Royals might not be expected to contend over the next couple of seasons, but adding a piece like Santana is fundamental if the 2015 World Series champions want to begin to claw back towards relevance in one of the league’s toughest divisions.

]]>On Wednesday, the MLB’s Kansas City Royals announced that Mahomes had purchased a minority stake in the team, joining its ownership group at the ripe age of 24.
Mahomes, who was awarded by the Chiefs with a 12-year contract worth around $500 million after leading the franchise to a Super Bowl title, will now make a mark in the city’s sports in a different way after purchasing a share of the Royals.
It should come as no surprise that Mahomes would be interested in the world of baseball, as his father Pat spent over a decade as a pitcher in the league during the younger Mahomes’ childhood.
Mahomes explained his decision by saying, “I love this city and the people of this great town. This opportunity allows me to deepen my roots in the community, which is something I’m excited to do.”
The percentage stake that Mahomes owns in the team was not made public.
Kansas City dropped their first game with Mahomes at a part-owner, losing 4-3 to the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. But both the star quarterback as well as the baseball franchise are sure to enjoy many wins in the future together.

]]>The Royals announced the hiring of former MLB catcher and St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny to succeed Yost on Thursday. He has spent the past year working in the Kansas City organization as a special adviser for player development.
The 49-year-old Matheny was fired by the Cardinals last July after spending the better part of seven seasons with the team. During his tenure with St. Louis, he led the Cardinals to a 591-474 regular-season record and won three NL Central division titles as well as two NL pennants.
The Royals, who have failed to make the playoffs since winning the 2015 World Series, will look to Matheny to help develop their roster full of young talent. He won’t be expected to compete for the playoffs immediately, as the team has posted back-to-back 100+ loss seasons, but management will expect to see improvement.
Details of their new manager’s contract terms were not immediately made available by the Royals.
Matheny will have a big task ahead of him to lead Kansas City back to contention, but he has the experience needed in order to do so.

]]>Yost will leave the Royals as the manager with the most wins (744) in history of the franchise. He also led the team to two consecutive World Series appearances in 2014 and 2015, managing to win one championship.
After taking the World Series, Royals failed to make it to the playoffs in the following three years and won’t be playing in the postseason in 2019 as well. According to Yost, however, the bad times are behind and Kansas City is in for a bright baseball future under the new manager from here onward.
“With the development of our young players and our returning veterans, I feel and hope the worst is behind us in this rebuilding phase of our organization,” – said Yost in a statement. “My plan all along was to get us through the rough times, then turn it over to a new manager to bring us the rest of the way. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here as your manager and will never forget the good and the hard times we had together as an organization and a fanbase.”
Ned Yost took over Kansas City Royals in 2010, taking over from Trey Hillman early in the season. Yost managed to improve the team’s record in each of his first five seasons at the helm, culminating with 4-1 win in the World Series against New York Mets in 2015.
Yost, who also spent time as Milwaukee Brewers manager between 2003 and 2008, retires with 1163 – 1277 record in the regular season and 22-9 record in the postseason.

]]>It appears that Glass, an 84-year-old Missouri native that purchased the team in 2000 for $96 million, is nearing a deal to sell the Royals to a new owner. That new owner is John Sherman, a local businessman and energy entrepreneur who is currently a part-owner of the Cleveland Indians.
Glass is expected to finalize the sale at some point this season, which will multiply by more than ten what he spent on the team nearly 20 years ago.
The team has had both tough times as well as successes under Glass’s ownership, with the franchise not making the playoffs from the year he bought the team until the 2014 season. The Royals then went on to qualify for the World Series in the same year until winning the championship in the 2015 season despite being a small market team with a low budget.
Glass was, however, sometimes criticized due to a perceived unwillingness to spend big money in order to bring the team more valuable players.
Sherman will inherit a team that has failed to make the playoffs for the past 3 seasons and looks to be in a tough spot heading into the new decade.
