]]>Thompson started his scoring run on the Warriors’ first possession of the game, hitting a three-pointer after an assist from Draymond Green. The 33-year-old All-Star went on to hit seven buckets from beyond the arc and shoot 12-of-18 from the field to help his team grab a 75-58 lead on the half.
The Suns game marked the fifth time that he managed to score at least eight three-pointers in the first half. According to Basketball Reference, this is the most by any player since “at least” the 1996-97 NBA season.
With the Warriors already having a big lead, Thompson took a breather in the second half. He finished the game with 38 points and five rebounds. He is currently averaging 22.3 points per game, tying his career-high from the 2016-17 campaign.
The win over the Suns allowed the Warriors to remain at No. 5 in the loaded West and avoid slipping to the play-in tournament. They are currently tied with the LA Clippers, who are at No. 6, and trail the fourth-seeded Phoenix by a game and a half.

]]>According to the team, Thompson suffered an Achilles injury in his right knee while working out in Southern California and getting ready for the season.
The injury occurred on the same day that the Warriors drafted promising center James Wiseman with the No. 2 pick in the NBA draft. The team was optimistic that they would be able to be competitive again in 2021, with their superstar shooter Stephen Curry finally healed up from a broken hand that kept him out for a good part of the 2020 season, Thompson coming back, and a promising big man in place.
With Thompson no longer available, the team is going to have to figure out a way to replace him and might have to pick up several free agents to try and fill the hole that Thompson’s season-ending injury has created.
Thompson injured his left leg in the final game of the 2019 season, Game 6 of the NBA Finals in which the Warriors lost to the Toronto Raptors. With a healthy Thompson and Curry leading the offense, Golden State won back-to-back NBA titles in 2017-2018.

“Obviously, I’m a big fan of Klay Thompson,” explained West. “I think there were certain people that were of a different opinion because Kevin Love was an attractive player to have because of his ability to spread the court, his rebounding, his passing — he’s a good player.”
“But to me, the perfect player — and he wasn’t as far along in his career when this trade had been talked about — the perfect player for Steph was Klay. He never seeks the spotlight. He just plays the game. And he has gotten better and better, and frankly, he’s one of the most underrated players in the league who gets not as much love as he should get.”

]]>Myers expressed enthusiasm about Thompson’s return over the weekend during a chat with reporters on Warriors vs. Los Angeles Lakers game.
“I think there’s a chance,” said Myers when asked if Thompson might play this season. “We’re going to have an update probably around All-Star break. But like Steph, if they’re healthy and they’re cleared, they’ll play. But if they’re not, obviously we’re not going to play them.”
The Warriors’ are also without two-times MVP guard Stephen Curry, who had to undergo surgery to repair hand fracture in early November. Curry was initially projected to be out for three months, but he is still to return to action.
“They both love basketball. Klay has had the hardest time being away from it. It’s like he’s thirsty and can’t drink water,” Myers added. “And Steph as well. But Steph is closer than Klay. You can ask him yourself. But it feels like Klay hasn’t played in a long, long time. So it’ll be exciting when we got all those guys back.”
Klay Thompson tore his ACL in the third quarter of deciding Game 6 in NBA Finals against Toronto Raptors. Warriors ended up losing that game and failing to defend their NBA championship title from the previous season.

They now own a 2 game lead over Denver for the top spot in the conference with only 17 games left in the season.
The key to Golden State’s victory was undoubtedly guard Klay Thompson’s performance.
Thompson, who had missed the Warriors’ two previous games with knee soreness, returned to make 9 three-pointers and score 39 points despite Denver’s best efforts to slow him down.
Kevin Durant turned in a big and ultra-efficient performance of his own, shooting 10-15 from the field and scoring 27 points.
While the West race isn’t over yet, the Dubs’ win increases their odds to finish the season as the conference’s top seed.
