No Christmas pudding for her, she was straight into it.”
Along with Osaka, former ATP men’s number one Rafael Nadal is also expected to mark his return to tennis at the Brisbane International this week. The 22-time Grand Slam champion has not played since last January after he suffered a hip flexor injury at the Australian Open.

This has and always will be a special tournament for me and I wish I could have stepped on court, but my body won’t let me. I will see you next year.”
Osaka has been plagued by a series of injuries this year, sitting out of Wimbledon and the grasscourt season due to an Achilles injury while also withdrawing from the first round of the US Open because of a back problem.
A four-time grand slam winner, Osaka’s last victory came at the Australian Open in 2021. She previously won the tournament in 2019, while also winning the US Open on two occasions; in 2018 and 2020.

The 2022 Wimbledon Championship is set to take place between June 27 and July 10 at the All England Club in London. Osaka’s exit from Wimbledon isn’t a huge shocker since she previously mentioned she might miss the tournament in an interview at the French Open. The 24-year-old player explained she’s not as motivated to compete because Wimbledon feels “like an exhibition” after it was stripped of the ranking points in the face of its polarizing Russian ban.
2022 has been a rocky year for Osaka, who dropped to no. 43 in the WTA rankings after taking several breaks from tennis. She most recently took part in the French Open last month but lost to Amanda Anisimova in the very first round.

]]>In the women’s singles finals on Saturday, Osaka faced this year’s sensation Jennifer Brady and emerged victorious in straight sets.
The first set saw a balanced competition, with Osaka and Brady being tied 4-4 at one point. Osaka then served for the 5-4 lead before breaking Brady and claiming the first set.
The second set, however, was less dramatic. Brady looked disheartened after giving away the first set, which Osaka took advantage of. Osaka sprinted towards the 4-0 lead and needed only four more games to get her fourth Grand Slam title.
Djokovic, on the other hand, had a surprisingly easy job against Daniil Medvedev, beating the high-flying Russian in straight sets.
Djokovic took the 3-0 lead in the first set, but Medvedev somehow managed to bounce back from the initial shock and level him up. Still, Djokovic didn’t allow him to complete the comeback, getting the crucial break to win 7-5.
The two remaining sets were a smooth sail for Djokovic, as Medvedev made errors often and plenty. He was only able to collect four games for the remainder of the match and will have to look for his first Grand Slam win elsewhere.

]]>Osaka got the win easier than expected, dismantling Williams in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-4. The No. 3-seeded Japanese athlete once again showed her dominance on the hard court, frustrating Williams for the better part of the match and causing her to make 24 unforced errors.
“I don’t know if there’s any little kids out here today, but I was a little kid watching her play. And just to be on the court playing against her, for me, is a dream,” said Osaka after her win.
The loss against Osaka extended Williams’ drought on the majors. She hasn’t won a Grand Slam title since 2017’s Australian Open despite making four finals.
Osaka, on the other hand, is aiming for her fourth Grand Slam after previously winning the US Open in 2018 and 2020, and the Australian Open in 2019. In order to get there, she will have to go through this year’s sensation Jennifer Brady.
Brady punched her ticked for the 2021 Australian Open finals with a 6-4, 3-6, and 6-4 win over Karolina Muchova. This will be the first Grand Slam finals appearance for the 25-year-old American, whose previous best score was the semis at the 2020 US Open.

]]>On Saturday, at the Court Philippe Chatrier, it seemed that Serena was just as surprised as the spectators when Kenin won with 6–2, 7–5. It is more than evident that with this match the young rising star is coming out as a future big name in this sport considering her age, how well she played the match and the great opponent she defeated.
After the match, a tearful Kenin said: “A lot of emotions. Serena is a true champion, a lot of respect for her. Playing against Serena you’ve got to fight for every point. I’m just so happy for this win.”
Another top-ranked player that left the French Open this weekend is Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka, who lost from the 23-year-old Czech player Katerina Siniakova with 6–4, 6–2. This also came as a big surprise since Osaka is ranked No.1 in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association and is the reigning champion in women’s singles at the Australian and US Open.

]]>Osaka, at 21 years old, achieved her second consecutive Grand Slam title by winning the women’s singles title at the Australian Open on Saturday.
She defeated Petra Kvitova by a 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 count in the final in Melbourne.
Osaka, who was born in Japan but raised in the United States, has officially cemented herself as one of the forces to be reckoned with in women’s tennis.
Osaka will almost certainly certainly go up to become the #1 ranked women’s singles player in the world after winning the Australian Open. She was ranked #4 at the beginning of the tournament.
Osaka’s 2018 US Open title was full of controversy. Despite beating Serena Williams in the final, little was said about the winner of the major upset. Instead, most people focused upon the drama that beset the final after Williams was levied unfair penalties by the match referee and got into a shouting match with him.
This time, however, all eyes are on Osaka. Her win over #8 ranked Kvitova was the story of her simply being the better player.
Women’s tennis may just have a new face, and it’s time to take notice.

]]>Following her straight-sets win over former World No.1 Serena Williams, Osaka’s name has become an Internet sensation mostly because of Williams’ altercation with the match umpire during the match.
The deal, valued at $8.5 million a year, will make the 20-year-old Japanese the highest paid woman in an endorsement deal. The amount will dwarf her $3.8 million pay-check for winning this year’s Grand Slam but it will be more than what fellow player Caroline Wozniacki gets.
If the deal goes through, Osaka will rock Forbes list among the top earning players but will come second to her idol, Williams. Osaka has the American to thank for her new found fame.
After confronting the chair umpire and calling him a thief at the finals, the video and story went viral instantly. News channels picked it up and millions of sports fans have been split on how to react to the event. Williams was also denied a point, docked a game and fined $17,000 for her altercation.
Besides Adidas, Osaka is set to sign another million-dollar branding deal with car maker Nissan as a spokeswoman.
