Tennis fans all around the globe were in for a big surprise when the holder of 23 majors and three-time champion Serena Williams was thrown out of the French Open by the 20-year-old US tennis player Sofia Kenin who ranks 35th in the world.

On Saturday, at the Court Philippe Chatrier, it seemed that Serena was just as surprised as the spectators when Kenin won with 6–2, 7–5. It is more than evident that with this match the young rising star is coming out as a future big name in this sport considering her age, how well she played the match and the great opponent she defeated.

After the match, a tearful Kenin said: “A lot of emotions. Serena is a true champion, a lot of respect for her. Playing against Serena you’ve got to fight for every point. I’m just so happy for this win.”

Another top-ranked player that left the French Open this weekend is Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka, who lost from the 23-year-old Czech player Katerina Siniakova with 6–4, 6–2. This also came as a big surprise since Osaka is ranked No.1 in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association and is the reigning champion in women’s singles at the Australian and US Open.
