Veteran midfielder Lee Nguyen won’t start the new MLS season with the New England Revolution. Instead, the 34-year-old player decided to head to Vietnam where he will play for Ho Chi Minh City in the country’s V. League 1.

The move doesn’t come as a surprise, as Nguyen was linked with a transfer to Vietnam midway through the 2020 MLS season while he was with Inter Miami FC. He ended up being traded to New England in September, playing 12 games for the club and scoring once.

Ho Chi Minh City announced the move on their social media late last week.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CJNhdaPjRkS/

This will mark Nguyen’s second stint in Vietnam, as he already played in V. League 1 between 2009 and 2011. During these four seasons, he suited up for Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Becamex Binh Duong.

After leaving Vietnam, Lee Nguyen signed with the New England Revolution in 2012 and became one of the club’s best players in the following years. He played a total of 206 games during his first stint with the franchise, scoring 52 goals and earning an MLS Best IX nod in 2014.

Nguyen also spent two seasons with LAFC (2018-2019), making 42 appearances and helping the team to a Supporters’ Shield trophy last year.

The MLS East Conference Finals matchup is set. New England Revolution got an upset 3-1 win over Orlando City on Sunday to secure their spot, while Columbus Crew needed extra-time to see off the surprise of the season Nashville SC.

Revolution, who entered the playoffs as the No.8 seed, had an electric start against Orlando, needing just 25 minutes to score two goals. It was the doing of Carles Gil, who scored from the penalty spot in 17th, and Gustavo Bou, who cleaned up the woodwork miss from Adam Buksa eight minutes later to give his team 2-0 lead.

Orlando didn’t have any intention to give up, cutting into New England’s lead in the 33rd minute thanks to Junior Urso. However, their chances of getting level worsened when Mauricio Pereyra got ejected for his start on Matt Polster early in the second period.

Nani had a chance to give City a lifeline in the 74th minute via a penalty kick, but Revolution’s goalie Matt Turner managed to make the save and hold off goal-hungry Orlando.

Finally, Bou removed any doubts about the winner when he used Gil’s crafty assist to make it 3-1.

Columbus Crew and Nashville, on the other hand, didn’t offer such an eventful regular time. Both teams had their fair share of chances but looked more focused on keeping their goal intact than wanting to score.

After scoreless two periods, the extra time offered some excitement, at least for Columbus’ fans.

Crew scored in the 99th minute via Pedro Santos and then doubled their advantage just four minutes later when Gyasi Zardes found the net. This quick double-strike by Columbus caught Nashville off-guard, and they never managed to recover after.

New England and Columbus are now set to face off for the spot in MLS Cup Finals on December 6th.

Orlando City and Columbus Crew have joined Toronto FC and the Philadelphia Union by claiming their spots in this season’s MLS Playoffs. This is the first time that Orlando City has made it to the playoffs in its six-year history.

While Orlando was held to a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls after New York scored a last-minute equalizer, they ultimately secured a playoff spot thanks to the actions of Toronto FC, who defeated Atlanta with a late winner of their own.

Also proceeding to the playoff rounds from the Eastern Conference is Columbus Crew. After enduring a four-game winless streak, Columbus defeated New York City FC to grab third place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Having led the Eastern Conference standings for a large portion of the season, recent slip-ups saw Columbus Crew lose their poll position to close competitor Toronto FC. Fortunately, with the return of Darlington Nagbe and Lucas Zelarayan, Crew’s post season hopes seem to have been restored.

There is still one playoff spot in the Eastern Conference up for grabs, with New England Revolution and NYCFC still fighting it out for the final spot in this year’s post-season.

Spanish international and Toronto FC midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo was recently included in the MLS Team of the Week for the fourth time this season. This comes after he scored the winning goal—a perfectly-timed diving header—in Toronto’s crucial clash against fellow title contenders Philadelphia Union on the weekend. This was the third match-winning goal that Pozuelo scored in as many games.

With seven goals to his name, the reigning MLS Player of the Month for September is currently ranked fifth on the league’s top scorers charts. He is also in 1st place on the assists charts, having bagged nine assists so far this season.

What’s more, Pozuelo has also proven his worth in other statistically-tracked areas, ranking first in the league in terms of Big Chances Created (13), Chances Created (52) and Expected Assists (5.94).

With his side set to play New England Revolution on Thursday, Revolution defender Andrew Farrell remains wary of Pozuelo’s imminent threat.

“He’s been great since he’s been in the league, a very dangerous player, very similar to the [Sebastian] Giovinco effect in the fact he’s a game-changer so we have to be aware of him at all times,” Farrell stated in a press conference.

Pozuelo is being favored by many pundits to win the Landon Donovan MVP Award come the end of this season.

Former U.S. international forward Teal Bunbury is currently in his seventh year with New England Revolution, and it appears that he won’t be leaving anywhere anytime soon.

Revolution officially announced over the weekend that Bunbury inked an extension that will keep him with the organization for several more years. The 30-year-old player was previously on an expiring contract and would become a free agent after this season.

Speaking with reporters after the news was made public, Bunbury said that his “emotions are really high,” adding that signing extension represents a “special moment” for him.

Revolution’s head coach Bruce Arena was also pleased to know he will have Bunbury on his roster for years to come.

“I’ve had the pleasure to work with Teal Bunbury over the past year and have found him to be an invaluable part of our team and organization,” Arena. “Teal’s contributions on the field speak for themselves and he has been an important part of our team’s rebuilding efforts.”

Teal Bunbury made his MLS debut with Sporting Kansas City in 2010 and ended up making 98 appearances for the club in the next four years. In 2014, Bunbury was traded to New England in exchange for a first-round MLS SuperDraft pick and allocation money.

Since then, Bunbury played 171 games with the club and has scored 35 goals, including one in 2020. He currently finds himself eighth on New England’s all-time scoring list.

Despite being born in Canada, Bunbury represented the United States on the international level. He made four appearances with USMNT and scored one goal.

New England Revolution’s Andrew Farrell is staying put for at least several more seasons. According to Revolution’s official statement, Farrell recently inked a multi-year extension with the team.

By signing Farrell to a new deal, Revolution secures the stability and continuity of its back four. The 28-year-old CB, who was New England’s No. 1 overall in 2013 SuperDraft, already has 227 career starts with the organization in MLS.

“Andrew Farrell has been an outstanding player and person for the Revolution over the past seven years,” said New England’s sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena in a statement. “He is a great leader and representative for our club and has proved to be a durable and consistent player throughout his career. We are pleased that Andrew will remain a Revolution player for many years to come.”

During his time in New England, Farrell was named Revolution Defender of the Year three times and has one MLS All-Star appearance from 2016. He is currently among the Revolutions career-leaders in several categories including games played (sixth) and starts (fifth).

“I’m thrilled to sign this extension with the Revolution and to continue my career in New Englandת” said Farrell. “I’ve always felt like New England was a second home for me, thanks in large part to the unwavering support of our fans over the years.”

New England Revolution isn’t wasting any time putting together a contending team for the 2020 MLS campaign. The team announced on Friday that they have signed former Manchester United defender Alexander Buttner using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM).

According to Revolution’s official statement, Buttner will join the team after receiving his visa. He will occupy an international roster spot.

“Alexander brings experience at the game’s most competitive levels, and his skill and pedigree will make him an important asset for the club on and off the field,” said New England’s sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena in a statement.

Buttner, who mostly plays as a left-back, initially worked out for New England in September. He was a free agent since July when his contract with SBV Vitesse ended.

Alexander Buttner started his career with Vitesse, where he played 107 games between 2008 and 2012. Buttner then joined Man Utd in a high profile transfer but failed to play a prominent role with Premier League giants. He also had stints with Dynamo Moscow and Anderlecht among other teams.

New England Revolution is making sure that they have a goalkeeper position covered for years to come. Revolution announced on Wednesday that they have signed goalie Matt Turner to a multi-year extension. The financial terms of the deal remained undisclosed.

Turner entered the season as a backup but eventually managed to win the starting spot on the team. He started 13 games with Revolution in 2019, helping them to a 7-2-4 record.

“I’m thrilled to continue my career with the club that took a chance on me as an undrafted rookie from a small school, invested in my development, and gave me an opportunity to prove myself at this level,” – said Turner after inking the deal. “I can’t wait to continue playing in front of The Fort, expand my work in the community, and hopefully bring a championship to this great city that I now consider my home.”

Matt Turner started his career with Jersey Express in Premier Development League in 2014 and spent two years with the team. He joined Revolution in 2016 after a preseason trial with the team but had to wait until 2018 to make his MLS debut. Turner ended up appearing in 27 games last season, making 83 saves and having five clean sheets.

Besides Turner, Revolution also has Cody Cropper and Brad Knighton at their disposal at the goalkeeper position.

It also didn’t help that the team suffered 6-1 loss to Philadelphia Union and 5-0 loss to Chicago Fire in the last five days.

New England announced that assistant coach Mike Lapper will take over the team on an interim basis while the club conducts a search for a new manager.

“The New England Revolution announced today that Brad Friedel has been relieved of his duties as the club’s head coach, effective immediately,” – said Revolution in an official statement. “Revolution assistant coach Mike Lapper will take over as interim head coach while the club begins the search for its next head coach.”

Brad Friedel started his coaching career with the United States U19 in 2016 while also serving as an assistant with United States U20 team, with whom he won 2017 CONCACAF U-20 Championship.

Friedel joined New England Revolution ahead of 2018 as a replacement for Jay Heaps, and managed to lead the team to eight spot in the Eastern Conference. He finishes his time with Revolution with a managerial record of 12-21-13.

Brad Friedel is no longer the manager of New England Revolution, the team has confirmed on Thursday. The decision comes after Revolution opened the season with only two wins in 12 games.
