The Dallas Cowboys haven’t yet been able to agree with a contract extension with offensive superstars like Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott, but Jerry Jones made a step towards securing the team’s future after agreeing to a five-year, $64 million contract extension with inside linebacker Jaylon Smith on Tuesday.

Smith, a second-round pick out of Notre Dame in the 2016 NFL Draft, will now be under the Cowboys’ control for the next seven seasons. The tackling machine spoke of a desire to remain a “Cowboy for life” when signing his new deal, demonstrating that he’s clearly happy to be in Dallas.

It’s been a long rise to this point for the Fort Wayne, Indiana native, who suffered a devastating knee injury at the end of his college career. Smith tore both the ACL and LCL in his final game in the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State, plunging his draft stock and leaving many to wonder if he’d ever be the player he once was.

Clearly, he’s come back strong.

Smith started all 16 games for Dallas last season, finishing the season with 121 combined tackles and 4 sacks. He was named Pro Football Focus’s “Breakout Player of the Year” and looks to have a strong future as a top linebacker in the league.

Now, he knows that he’ll be in Dallas for the foreseeable future.

Colin Kaepernick might not have gotten a contract offer from any National Football League franchise over the past three seasons, but he’s still not giving up on his dreams to return to the league.

Kaepernick, who believes that the NFL has systemically decided to keep him out of the league after his controversial statements on race and American society, tweeted a motivational video illustrating his desire to return to the league.

The quarterback claims to have been waking up at 5 o’clock in the morning to train five days a week for the past three years ever since being let go by the San Francisco 49ers. Despite leading the Niners to a Super Bowl appearance against the Baltimore Ravens back in 2013 and years of solid production, he has been unable to find another shot in the world’s best football league.

The 31-year-old quarterback has thrown 72 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in his NFL career with an impressive 60% completion percentage. He’s known for his strong arm and his mobility while running.

Only time will tell if Kaepernick will get another shot to play in the NFL, but he certainly appears to have been doing his part to find another chance to be under center in the pros again.

The Miami Dolphins have decided to waive former defensive tackle Kendrick Norton and place him on non-football injury reserve after a tragic off-season injury.

This move entitles Norton to receive his 2019 season salary despite not being able to play.

The young defender lost his left arm due to an amputation after a traffic accident in Miami on the July 4th holiday. Police say that Kendrick was driving his Ford pickup truck when he tried to pass another driver. His car rammed into a concrete barrier and flipped, causing Norton to suffer severe injuries.

Norton was lucky to walk away from the accident with his life, but the amputation of his left arm meant that he had to retire from football at the age of 22.

The Miami native was signed by his hometown team last December after spending 2018 as a member of the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad. He wasn’t expected to compete for a roster spot in the 2019 season before suffering the injury.

While Norton might not be able to return to the football field, he will at least have the peace of mind of receiving an NFL salary in 2019 as he transitions to life post-football.

He hopes to receive a prosthetic left arm soon to replace the one that was amputated.

The Atlanta Falcons took care of pending business on Wednesday after agreeing to a four-year, $57 million contract extension with standout linebacker Deion Jones.

The dominant linebacker’s new deal will keep him in Atlanta through the 2023 season, and includes $36 million in guaranteed salary.

It’s been quite a rise to the elite for Jones, who was a relatively unheralded second round draft pick out of Louisiana State University in the 2016 NFL Draft. He immediately made an impact with the Falcons, starting 13 games and recording 106 total tackles.

He got even better in 2017, when he was given his first career NFL Pro Bowl nod. He anchored Atlanta’s defense, recording 138 total tackles and 3 interceptions, which led to him establishing himself as one of the league’s best linebackers.

Jones picked up a foot injury in the first game of the 2018 season, which caused him to miss 10 of the Falcons’ 16 games. His absence was felt during the time he spent on the injured reserve list, as the Falcons’ defense struggled mightily without him.

The Falcons now hope that Jones will come back healthy and strong in 2019 so that he anchors their defense both this season and for the next four years to come.

Jones, the 6th overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans, spent the majority of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals. The cornerback made headlines both for his play on the field and for his behavior off of it.

He spent the 2018 season with the Denver Broncos, playing sparingly and only appearing in 7 games.

The Atlanta native spent the first two seasons of his career with the Tennessee Titans before being suspended by Roger Goodell for the 2007 season after a violent incident at a nightclub.

Jones then went to Cincinnati after a short stint with the Dallas Cowboys, where he began to get in trouble less and perform well on the field. Pacman was named a 2014 First Team All-Pro selection and was also selected to participate in the 2016 Pro Bowl.

The brash cornerback missed two entire seasons in his career due to legal troubles.

Jones finishes his NFL career with 411 total tackles and 17 interceptions. He is a character who will not easily be forgotten in the league’s history books.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been determined to retool their defense all offseason, and they got a step closer to their objective on Tuesday.

The Chiefs agreed to a huge trade with the Seattle Seahawks to acquire defensive end Frank Clark, one of the top pass rushers in the National Football League.

Clark hadn’t yet signed the franchise tag deal offered to him by Seattle earlier in the offseason, making clear his desire to move on to another franchise.

He found that home in Kansas City, which was motivated to acquire the defensive end in order to upgrade the team’s pass rush. Kansas City gave up a first and a third-round pick in this year’s draft in order to acquire him.

Clark made his NFL debut after being drafted in the second round in 2015, playing sparingly in his rookie season. However, in 2016, he became a regular starter from Seattle and produced well. Clark has recorded 32 sacks during the past three combined seasons, including a career-best mark of 13 in the 2018 season.

As part of the deal, Clark has agreed to a five-year, $105.5 million deal that includes $64 million guaranteed.

The Chiefs solved a big piece of their defensive puzzle and hope that Clark will become one of their top players.

After long and complex negotiations, the Seahawks and Russell Wilson have finally agreed to a deal.

Wilson has signed a four-year, $140 million contract extension with the team that makes him the highest-paid player in the NFL.

The contract also includes a $65 million signing bonus which Wilson will receive up front.

Wilson announced the news first-hand just before a self-imposed midnight deadline that he had set for a new deal with the team with a video posted to his Twitter account.

In addition to making him football’s top earner, his new contract guarantees that he will stay in Seattle through the 2023 season.

The 30-year-old was granted a no trade clause in his new deal.

Wilson has become one of the most elite quarterbacks in the league over the past several seasons.

He led the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl trophy after leading them to Super Bowl XLIII.

Wilson had arguably his best season as a pro in 2018, passing for 3,448 yards, 35 touchdowns, and only 7 interceptions. He was named to the Pro Bowl for the sixth time in his career.

Seattle and Wilson can sleep peacefully now, knowing that they’re both set for the future.

After trading away Ryan Tannehill to the Tennessee Titans, Miami had to look to fill the hole created at quarterback.

The Dolphins agreed to a free agent deal with quarterback Ryan Fitzgerald on Sunday, which gives them at least a temporary fix to their problem. The deal is for two years and $11 million guaranteed. He could make up to twenty million dollars with incentives.

Fitzpatrick is an NFL veteran that is now 36 years old. He has had a journeyman career, playing for seven NFL teams after the Rams drafted him in 2005.

The Dolphins will be the eighth team of Fitzpatrick’s career.

Fitzpatrick spent the last two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, splitting time with Jameis Winston. He started 7 games for Tampa last season and threw for 2,366 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

The bearded quarterback, a graduate of Harvard University, has also started for the Rams, Bengals, Bills, Titans, Texans, and Jets in his career.

Fitzpatrick has accumulated 29,357 career passing yards, throwing for 190 touchdowns and 148 interceptions.

The Dolphins’ new quarterback isn’t a star, but he provides stability to a rebuilding franchise. Miami is expected to search for their quarterback of the future in the next couple of drafts.

For now, Fitzpatrick is the presumptive starter in Miami and will head new coach Brian Flores’ offense.

Max Unger dealt the New Orleans Saints a surprising blow Saturday after he unexpectedly retired from football.

Unger had a reputation as one of the NFL’s best centers, and was the leader of New Orleans’ excellent offensive line.

The University of Oregon alum played in the NFL for the past 10 seasons, making 3 Pro Bowls, including last season. He was also named a first-team NFL All Pro selection in the 2012 season.

The Seattle Seahawks drafted Unger in the 2nd round of the 2009 NFL Draft, and he quickly established himself as a top center in the league. He played for Seattle for 6 seasons, winning Super Bowl XLVIII with the team.

The Seahawks then traded Unger to the Saints before the beginning of the 2015 season in exchange for a first round pick and tight end Jimmy Graham.

The Saints counted on Unger to anchor their offensive line, and he did well. Unger was a rock during his time with New Orleans, starting 67 of 68 games in four seasons.

The Saints now must look to fill Unger’s void at the center position via trade or free agency. By retiring, Unger will forfeit all of his $7 million salary for the 2019 season.
