Manchester City are through to the UEFA Champions League finals after a dominant 4-0 win over Real Madrid in the second leg of the semifinal clash between the two teams. The first leg finished with a 1-1 draw, giving City a 5-1 win on aggregate.

Manchester City is now set to face Seria A side Inter Milan in the UCL Finals on 10 June at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey.

While the first match between Man City and Real was tightly contested, the second leg game was entirely dominated by City. They were up 2-0 by halftime thanks to a brace by Bernardo Silva while having restricted the La Liga side to just one shot at the goal. The sense was that the English club could have scored more if it wasn’t for Madrid’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who made several miraculous saves.

The second half saw a more urgent Real team, but they failed to make their chances count. Man City, on the other hand, continued to be aggressive, and it resulted in two more goals. Defender Eder Militao turned Manuel Akanji’s header into his own net in the 76th minute, while attacker Julian Alvarez scored in added time to make it 4-0.

“It’s a beautiful night for us. We knew it was going to be tough. But to beat this Madrid team 4-0 at home, it was wonderful,” Silva said after the game. “A wonderful feeling to be in the final again, and hopefully this time we can try and win it.”

Manchester City are now headed to the second Champions League finals in three years. Their previous trip in 2021 ended on a bitter note as they lost 1-0 to Chelsea and failed to get the first UCL trophy in club history.

Real Madrid defeated Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night to book their place in the UEFA Champions League semifinals. The La Liga side progressed with a 4-0 aggregate win.

The game appeared to be a cagey affair during the first half, with Chelsea putting pressure on the visitors as they searched for a way back into the game after losing the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu 2-0. Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella came closest to scoring, with Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois stretching to save his close-range effort in order to keep the game goalless.

Once the second half got underway, Real Madrid emerged as the stronger team, with Rodrygo grabbing a vital away goal in the 58th minute to dash the home side’s hopes of launching an improbable comeback. The winger scored again in the 80th minute to seal Real Madrid’s place in the semifinals.

“I don’t know how to explain it. I always say it’s a very special competition for me, every time I play I can help the team,” Rodrygo said in his post-match interview. “I’m happy and I hope to carry on like that, scoring more goals, providing more assists, and winning the Champions League again.”

Real Madrid will face the winner in the matchup between Manchester City and Bayern Munich. City currently has the advantage, having defeated Bayern 3-0 in the first leg.

You can’t blame Manchester City for thinking they have booked a place in the UEFA Champions League finals after 89 minutes of their second-leg semi-finals match against Real Madrid. After all, they were up two goals on aggregate and the Spanish club didn’t seem like a team that could match their intensity on the field. However, it turned out that “90 minutes at the Santiago Bernabeu is a very long time” indeed.

Despite trailing 0-1 in Wednesday’s match and 3-5 on aggregate, Real made it even in stoppage time and then finished the job in extra time. They are now set to play Liverpool in the UCL finals at Paris’ Stade de France and have a chance to win their 14th Champions League trophy.

Real welcomed City on Bernabeu and need at least a goal to keep their finals hope alive after losing 3-4 in Manchester last week. However, this proved easier said than done as the La Liga side struggled to catch Man City’s defense off-guard despite having some great-looking chances. The English club sat back and waited to strike from counterattacks.

Manchester City’s strategy paid off midway through the second half when winger Riyad Mahrez ran up to a loose ball and slammed it into the right top corner of Thibaut Courtois’ goal. At this point, considering the result and their lack of efficiency, it seemed like the time had come for Real Madrid to bow out of the tournament. Then, Brazilian winger Rodrygo entered the scene.

Rodrygo, the second-half sub, first scored a goal in 90′ minute off of Karim Benzema’s assist to give his team a glimpse of hope. Then, less than two minutes later, everyone at Bernabeu was at their feet as Rodrygo scored again for Real’s 2-1 lead and chance to go to extra time.

Their spirit already broken, Manchester City looked lost in extra time. This was on full display five minutes in when defender Ruben Dias took down Benzema with a poorly-timed sliding tackle. The referee pointed to the spot, and Benzema was as cool under pressure as it gets, calmly converting the kick with a well-placed shot. This proved to be enough for Real to seal one of the most remarkable UCL comebacks in recent memory as City failed to put themselves in a position to threaten Courtois again.

“This team, this club is capable of anything, we believed until the end,” Courtois said after the match. “We made it 1-1 and then 2-1, and they were dead. We were better in extra time. We had to defend well, and we did it. Incredible.”

The new season of UEFA Champions League officially kicked off this week, and we are already seeing some big upsets in the opening games. Arguably the biggest one took place on Wednesday night when Shakhtar Donetsk stunned La Liga champs Real Madrid and claimed an unlikely 2-3 away win.

Real entered the game as an overwhelming favorite and adopted an attacking mindset early on. Shakhtar, on the other hand, focused on defense and waited for their chances from counterattacks.

The sit and wait strategy proved successful for the Ukrainian club, as they managed to get the lead in the 29th minute. Viktor Korniyenko delivered an impressive breakthrough on the left side, entering the penalty box and flicking the ball to Tete. The Brazilian midfielder found himself alone in front of the goal and didn’t have a hard time putting the ball behind Thibaut Courtois.

Spanish club didn’t even have the time to recover from shock, and Shakhtar already added two more before the clock ran out to signal the end of the first half. Raphael Varane scored an own goal in the 33rd minute while Manor Solomon added another in the 42nd.

Real Madrid returned to the field, looking like a completely different team. This quickly reflected on the scoreboard, as Real cut into Shakhtar’s lead in the 54th minute thanks to a goal by midfielder Luka Modric. Vinicius Junior, coming off the bench, added another just five minutes later, and it looked like Los Blancos are on their way to deliver an impressive comeback.

Shakhtar, however, wasn’t about to let the win slip through their hands. They stopped the bleeding after conceding two quick goals, regrouped, and continued with impressive defense.

Real tried to force Shakhtar’s mistake by dominating the possession but ultimately fell short. They will now have to go back to the drawing board and rethink their strategy if they want to advance in a tough group that also has Inter Milan and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Real Madrid’s star forward Eden Hazard has been struggling to stay healthy last season, and it appears this trend continues in 2020/21. Despite being expected to make his season debut this week, Hazard suffered an injury setback and will be out for several more weeks.

According to Real’s official announcement, Hazard has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in his right leg that is threatening to sideline him at least three weeks. However, depending on the recovery process, he could miss even more time.

According to this timeline, Hazard might miss several important games, including El Classico against Barcelona in late October.

Eden Hazard joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2019, arriving on Santiago Bernabe from Chelsea in a $120 million transfer. Despite being expected to be the club’s next big star, Hazard failed to make any major impact on the club in his first season in Spain.

Due to a combination of fitness issues and injuries, Hazard was limited to only 22 games in 2019/20 and has scored only one goal in Real’s jersey. This goal came on October 5, 2019, in a 4-2 win over Granada, meaning that the 29-year-old player now spent almost a full year without finding the net.

Besides Hazard, Real will also be unable to count on German midfielder Toni Kross, who experienced gluteal issues in a win against Betis over the weekend. The team confirmed the decision on Tuesday but didn’t detailed timeline for Kross’ recovery.

Real Madrid appears to be kicking into high gear in the Champions League under three-time competition winner Zinedine Zidane. They took care of Turkish Super Lig champions with ease on Wednesday night at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, dominating their opposition in a 6-0 blowout.

Los Blancos were relentless in their demolition of a Galatasaray side that looked hapless against the 13-time Champions League winners. Real Madrid scored its first goal when 18-year-old Rodrygo scored in the 4th minute of the match, and they didn’t take their feet off of the gas.

Rodrygo scored again in the 7th minute on a header, recording a brace in the first several minutes of the match. Sergio Ramos extended Real Madrid’s lead to 3-0 only 7 minutes later after a penalty, and Madrid pushed its lead to 4-0 just before halftime after Karim Benzema found the net.

Los Blancos continued to suffocate Galatasaray in the second half, barely allowing the Turkish team to create any dangerous chances. Benzema scored his second goal of the night in the 81st minute, and then Rodrygo scored again during extra time to give himself a historic hat trick and to push the score to its 6-0 final.

Real Madrid now finds itself in second place in Group A with 7 points. They appear to be a good bet to advance to the knockout stage of the competition along with first-place Paris St. Germain.

The three-time reigning Champions League title-holders were upset in one of the most shocking results in the competition’s history.

Real Madrid, who won the competition in 2016, 2017, and 2018 and have the most titles (13) in the history of the competition, was humiliated by Ajax by a 1-4 final score at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night.

The Spanish giants have just completed what might be one of the worst weeks in the history of their club. They were beaten at home twice to rivals FC Barcelona last Wednesday and Sunday, eliminating them from a the Copa del Rey and effectively from La Liga’s title race.

Tuesday night’s loss against Ajax hurts the most, though.

Real Madrid won 1-2 in Amsterdam in the draw’s first leg and were massive favorites to win and advance last night.

However, the young Ajax squad outclassed Real Madrid and deservedly moved on.

Real Madrid’s defense had a disastrous night, allowing Hakim Ziyech, David Neres, Dusan Tadic, and Lasse Schøne to score for Ajax.

Only Marco Asensio found the goal for the home side.

Real Madrid now must endure six months without a meaningful game, something that has been almost unthinkable in recent years.
