La Liga giants Barcelona won’t have to look for a new head coach this summer after all. Barca’s boss, Xavi, changed his mind about leaving the club and will now remain in his position until the end of his contract in 2025.

Xavi had a meeting with Barca’s president, Joan Laporta, on Wednesday, and they agreed to continue the current project. The news was officially announced during a press conference on Thursday.

“Today, I have the satisfaction of informing you that Xavi will continue as the coach of Barça,” said Laporta.

“I’m a huge Barça fan. I have a high level of trust with the president and the board of directors. The complicity and support of the players has also been key,” added Xavi.

Xavi initially announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the 2023-24 season in January after a disappointing 5-3 loss to Villarreal in La Liga. At the time, Xavi said he felt that the club needed a new voice while also adding that the pressure that comes with coaching Barca has started to wear him off.

Since then, Barcelona embarked on an impressive run that saw them go undefeated in 13 games in all competitions. The streak ended with a 4-1 loss in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals against Paris Saint-Germain. Barca followed that up with a 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid in El Clasico.

Xavi was hired as Barca’s head coach in the summer of 2021. He guided the club to the La Liga title and Supercopa trophy in 2022–23, after which he signed an extension that runs through the 2024-25 season with an option for one additional year.

Brazil star forward Neymar isn’t planning on staying in Saudi Arabia for too long. According to Brazilian media outlet UOL, Neymar wants to return to his boyhood club Santos in 2025.

Neymar joined the Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli on a two-year contract with a yearly salary of around $220 million in the summer of 2023. He only managed to play five games with his new club, scoring one goal and adding three assists, before suffering an ACL injury.

While rehabbing from his injury in Brazil, Neymar attended Santos’ game against Palmeiras on Sunday and talked with the players in the locker room. During the chat, Neymar reportedly told Santos’ players and officials that he plans to return to the club next year after his contract with Al-Ahli expires.

Neymar joined Santos in 2003 at the age of 11. He signed his first professional contract with the club as a 17-year-old, making his debut in 2009. Neymar ended up playing five years with Santos, making 140 appearances and scoring 72 goals. He helped the club win Campeonato Paulista three times and the Copa Libertadores trophy in 2011.

Neymar left Santos in the summer of 2013 to join La Liga giants Barcelona in a transfer worth €57.1 million. He spent four years with Barca before joining Ligue 1 powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain.

The United States men’s national team once again showed they are the team to beat in CONCACAF. USMNT beat Mexico 0-2 on Sunday night, claiming their third consecutive CONCACAF Nations League title. No one has ever won the CONCACAF Nations League except the USMNT.

For the majority of the first half, two teams were testing each other out and it seemed the game could go either way. But in the 44th minute, Weston McKennie found Tyler Adams in the middle, who delivered a powerful shot from outside the penalty box that found its way to the net. This was Adams’ first goal in more than two years and his second in his entire international career.

“I try to put guys in situations like that, but when the ball came to me, and I felt like I had time on the ball, it was a no-brainer. So I’m happy that one went in and I’ll probably start shooting a little bit more now,” Adams, who was substituted at halftime due to minute restrictions, said after the game.

Gio Reina later increased USMNT’s lead to 2-0 with a nifty finish from the top of the penalty box in the 63rd minute.

With the win, USMNT not only retained its Nations League title but also extended its run of unbeaten games against Mexico. The U.S. hasn’t lost to El Tri in the last seven games, which is the longest stretch since the two teams played their first game in 1934.

LAFC is reportedly in advanced talks with AC Milan’s Olivier Giroud and will try to convince the French striker to make a move to MLS in the summer. Giroud’s contract with Milan expires after the 2023-24 season, and he will become a free agent.

Tom Bogert of The Athletic reports that despite positive talks between the two sides, a deal is not imminent. Giroud will take some time to consider his other options, which include staying in Europe or heading to Saudi Arabia.

If Giroud chooses to join LAFC, he would be reunited with his compatriot Hugo Lloris. Giroud and Lloris were part of France’s national team that won the World Cup in 2018 and reached the World Cup 2022 finals.

Despite turning 37 in September, Giroud has been playing at a high level this season. He has 14 goals and nine assists in 36 matches in all competitions while helping Milan to second place in Seria A standings at the moment and to make a Europa League quarterfinals appearance.

Olivier Giroud started his professional career in his native France, where he suited up for Grenoble, Tours, and Montpellier, among other teams. He made a switch to Premier League side Arsenal in 2012 and became one of the club’s key players, scoring 105 goals in 253 matches in six seasons. Giroud then went on to play for Chelsea before joining Milan ahead of the 2021–22 campaign.

La Liga powerhouse Real Madrid reportedly has a “verbal agreement” with Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies that will result in the Canadian star left-back moving to Santiago Bernabeu either this year or in 2025.

Davies will have just one year left on his contract with Bayern after the 2023-24 season. He has refused to sign a new deal with Bundesliga giants, and it is believed that Real’s interest played a significant part in his decision. Spanish club’s representatives have been in contact with Davies in recent months and have met with the player several times, according to a recent report by The Athletic.

Real is open to engaging in talks with Bayern in order to facilitate a move for Davies this upcoming summer if the German club is ready to accept a transfer fee below the player’s market value. If the two sides are unable to reach an agreement, Real would wait one more year and sign Davies as a free agent.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Real Madrid plucked a player away from Bayern Munich. In 2014, Real managed to land star midfielder Toni Kross on cheap because he had just one year left on his deal. Then, in 2021, Los Blancos snatched world-class defender David Alaba for free after his contract with Bayern expired.

Davies made 27 appearances in all competitions for Bayern this season and has recorded one goal and three assists. His projected market value, according to Transfer Markt, is €70 million.

The soccer career of Inter Miami’s new striker, Luis Suarez, could have turned out a lot differently. In a recent chat with Uruguayan DelSol 99.5FM, Suarez revealed that he almost signed with La Liga giants Real Madrid in 2014.

According to Suarez, Real wanted to sign him after the 2013-14 season, in which he scored 31 goals and dished 17 assists for Liverpool.

“My representative spoke to Real Madrid before the 2014 World Cup,” Suarez said via ESPN. “Real Madrid wanted to sign me and everything was going in the right direction … they were thinking about selling (Karim) Benzema to Arsenal, everything was already in place.”

However, Real started being cautious about the pursuit of Suarez after the infamous biting incident involving Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup. At that point Barcelona entered the race as well and ended up convincing Suarez to make a switch to Camo Nou.

“In the end, I had both options, and I chose Barca because it was my dream,” Suarez added.

Suarez joined Barcelona after the 2014 World Cup and became one of the best strikers in the world. During his time with the club, he scored 195 goals and added 113 assists in all competitions. He also won 13 trophies, including four La Liga titles and one UEFA Champions League.

Jurgen Klinsmann has been relieved of his duties as the head coach of South Korea’s national team. Klinsmann, who previously coached the United States men’s national team, is out after a disappointing outing at the 2024 Asian Cup.

Announcing the move, the Korea Football Association cited Klinsmann’s failure to “demonstrate leadership” as one of the reasons for his departure.

“Coach Klinsmann failed to demonstrate leadership that we expected from the national team coach, including game management, player management, and work attitude, which elevate the competitiveness of the national team,” said KFA’s president Chung Mong-gyu.

Klinsmann himself also confirmed the news with a post on social media.

“To all players, my coaching staff, and all Korean football fans with sincere gratitude!” he wrote on Instagram while pointing out the fact that his team was on a 13-game streak without loss before being eliminated by Jordan in the semi-finals of the Asian Cup.

Klinsmann took over South Korea in February 2023 on a contract that was supposed to last through the 2026 World Cup. However, he proved to be quite an unpopular hire, with Korean media criticizing his coaching methods, lack of interest in players from the domestic K League, and questionable game tactics.

The criticism was somewhat silenced by improved performances leading to the Asian Cup, but that proved to be temporary. Despite struggling for most of the tournament, Klinsmann’s team managed to advance to the semi-finals, where Jordan exposed all of their flaws. South Korea failed to register a single shot in a 2-0 loss, renewing calls for Klinsmann’s sacking.

United States men’s national team midfielder Gio Reyna is set to join Nottingham Forest on loan until the end of the 2023-24 season. The Premier League side will reportedly have an option to make the move permanent in the summer.

Reyna previously expressed the intention to leave Borussia Dortmund due to a lack of minutes. Several clubs from Europe had loan offers accepted by Borussia in recent weeks, including Ligue 1 side Marseille and La Liga’s Sevilla. However, Reyna ended up picking Forest as he believes the move gives him the best chance to resurrect his career.

Reyna’s move to Forest is expected to be confirmed later this week after the 21-year-old player undergoes his medical with the English club.

Reyna has had a challenging 2023-24 campaign with Borussia, failing to crack the starting 11 while his opportunities from the bench were also scarce. He played only 11 games in the Bundesliga, receiving just one start and playing a total of 270 minutes. Reyna has yet to register a single club goal this season.

Nottingham Forest is currently sitting at No. 16 in the Premier League standings, and adding a player like Reyna could help them a lot in their attempts to avoid relegation. Forest has 20 points, just two more than Everton, which finds itself in the relegation zone.

Liverpool’s manager Jurgen Klopp shocked the soccer world on Friday by announcing that he’ll leave the club at the end of the season.

Klopp detailed the decision, which he shared with club officials in November, in a video posted on social media. He expressed his love for Liverpool while explaining that he is “running out of energy.”

“I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again,” Klopp said.

Klopp also added that he will take at least one year break from managing while also promising he will never coach in the Premier League again.

Klopp considered leaving Liverpool before but ended up extending his contract until 2026. Liverpool fans took that as a sign that the German manager isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, which makes this recent development particularly shocking.

Liverpool is currently enjoying an outstanding campaign after a disappointing 2022-23 campaign. The club is currently sitting at the top of the Premier League standings with five points more than reigning champions Manchester City. The Reds are also through to the Round of 16 in the Europa League, are set to play in the finals of the Carabao Cup, and remain in the hunt for the FA Cup.

Since joining Liverpool in 2015, Klopp has won the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and UEFA Club World Cup. He also reached the UCL finals two more times.

United States men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter would like to see midfielder Gio Reyna find a new club and get regular playing time sooner rather than later.

Reportedly, Reyna is unhappy with the lack of playing time with Bundesliga’s Borussia Dortmund and is determined leave in January. Borussia also wouldn’t mind seeing him go but would like it to be a permanent transfer.

When asked about Reyna’s situation ahead of the international friendly against Slovakia, Berhalter said that he understands the 21-year-old player’s desire to play more and encouraged him in his search for a change of scenery.

“I think that any professional who is competitive wants to be on the field, and this is a case where Gio hasn’t been getting the game time that he wants and potentially looking for alternate options, and that’s completely understandable,” said Berhalter. “So, we support him and his quest to get on the field regularly and are looking forward to the outcome of that.”

Gio Reyna was featured in nine games this season and made one start in the Bundesliga. What’s even more telling about his status with Borussia is that he spent only 238 minutes on the pitch.

Despite not showing much this season, Reyna doesn’t lack suitors. A number of European clubs are reportedly interested in his services, including Ligue 1’s Marseille and Monaco, La Liga’s Sevilla and Villarreal, and Portugal’s Benfica.
