]]>Man City completed the transfer for Steffen back in December, but the team decided to let him stay with Crewe until summer. Now they hope the 24-year-old will get more first-team experience in one of Europe’s strongest soccer leagues, before bringing him to England.
The move was first reported by The Athletic’s Paul Tenorio.
This will be Steffen’s second stint in Germany, as he was spent time with SC Freiburg between 2015 and 2016. He made 14 appearances for Freiburg’s reserve team before becoming a third goalkeeper on the depth chart for the first team.
After failing to get significant playing time in Germany, Zack Steffen decided to return to the United States and sign with Columbus Crew in the summer of 2016. After becoming Crew’s starting goalkeeper in 2017, he had a breakthrough season in 2018 which saw him ending the year with 10 clean sheets and winning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.
Steffen is also a member of USMNT and is currently considered the first choice for the goalie position. He made eight appearances for nation’s first team so far.

]]>In a statement released by Columbus SC, the deal with City is the biggest in the club’s history and a record for a goalkeeper in the MLS. Steffen was signed for $10 million after a series of great performances in the last one year for both his club and country.
“Any success that I have had as a goalkeeper in MLS with Crew SC is a testament to those around me who have pushed me—teammates, coaches, staff, family, friends, and supporters,” the 23-year-old said. “Today’s announcement regarding next summer is a special moment for me and I look forward to finishing my time with his club on a strong note. I am eager to continue to put in the work to prove and be the best teammate I can.”
Steffen kicked off his professional career with Germany’s side Freiberg in 2015 and joined Columbus at the start of the 2017 season. 18 months later, the 23-year-old is the Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. He’s also proven to be a good player to the national team. This year, Steffen has played I six games for the national side, including a 1-1 draw against France.

]]>Columbus, Manchester City, and the MLS have been working behind closed doors to ink a deal worth up to $10 million for the 23-year-old. However, his inexperience outside of the US makes his chances of playing for Manchester City slim. The Citizens already have an adequate goalkeeper in Ederson Morales and have a wide variety of backups. Should they sign Steffen he will probably be shipped away for a loan on arrival.
So far, only Columbus has made a statement about the deal, claiming the deal is yet to be finalized.
“The club has been approached regarding a potential transfer of goalkeeper Zack Steffen but no deal has been finalized and the club will not be commenting on the specifics of reported offers.”
While City could partner Steffen with their current backup Arijanet Muric, a more realistic choice could be loaned to either of their partner clubs Girona or NAC Breda in the Netherlands. All the same, it will be interesting to see which club Steffen accepts after he turned down a $3.9 million offer from Championship side Bristol in July.
