After being named the Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year earlier this month, Columbus Crew’s Zack Steffen is readying up for a move to the Premier League Giant Manchester City in January.

Columbus, Manchester City, and the MLS have been working behind closed doors to ink a deal worth up to $10 million for the 23-year-old. However, his inexperience outside of the US makes his chances of playing for Manchester City slim. The Citizens already have an adequate goalkeeper in Ederson Morales and have a wide variety of backups. Should they sign Steffen he will probably be shipped away for a loan on arrival.

So far, only Columbus has made a statement about the deal, claiming the deal is yet to be finalized.

“The club has been approached regarding a potential transfer of goalkeeper Zack Steffen but no deal has been finalized and the club will not be commenting on the specifics of reported offers.”

While City could partner Steffen with their current backup Arijanet Muric, a more realistic choice could be loaned to either of their partner clubs Girona or NAC Breda in the Netherlands. All the same, it will be interesting to see which club Steffen accepts after he turned down a $3.9 million offer from Championship side Bristol in July.
