This may sound surprising, but five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman is still on the free-agent market. However, there is a good chance that changes soon, as the San Francisco 49ers seem interested in a reunion with the veteran.

After his contract with the 49ers expired in March, Sherman decided to sit back and see how will the market develop. Unfortunately for the 33-year-old star, it didn’t develop in the right way, and he is still waiting for an offer to play football in 2021.

San Francisco’s head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed to reporters on Monday that this offer might come from his team as the two parties recently talked about Sherman putting on the 49ers jersey once again.

“We’ve discussed it, and I’ve talked to Sherm about it, too,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said according to Matt Maiocco of the NBC Sports Bay Area. “Sherm’s always a possibility.”

The 49ers need a cornerback after Jason Verrett suffered a torn ACL that will keep him out for the remainder of the season. The team currently has veteran Josh Norman and 2021’s first-round pick Deommodore Lenoir lined as Verrett’s replacements. Still, they would most likely feel a lot more comfortable with Sherman, considering he is already familiar with the defensive schemes.

Sherman played with the 49ers between 2018 and 2020, making 34 appearances for the franchise. He contributed with 116 tackles, 16 pass deflections, four interceptions, one sack, and one defensive touchdown.
