San Francisco 49ers addressed their wide receiver need on Wednesday by signing veteran wideout Mohamed Sanu. Reportedly, Sanu inked a deal until the end of the season.

Sanu joins the 49ers after being released by New England Patriots earlier this year. The 31-year-old player combined for 59 receptions, 520 yards, and two touchdowns with the Pats and Atlanta Falcons in 2019.

The news was confirmed by Sanu’s agent Mike McCartney.

San Francisco have been struggling to construct a capable wide receiving core for 2020 with the departure of veteran Emmanuel Sanders in free agency and injuries playing a big part in it.

Sophomore player Jalen Hurd tore his ACL during training camp and was ruled out for the year, while veteran offseason acquisition Tavon Austin also won’t be able to play this season due to knee injury.

Furthermore, the 2020’s first-round pick Brandon Aiyuk is dealing with ankle issues, and his status is uncertain for Week 2 while return-specialist and occasional option on WR Richie James has a wrist injury.

Now, the 49ers are counting on Mohamed Sanu to take the No. 1 wideout spot and help their struggling passing game. It could help that Sanu will reunite with head coach Kyle Shanahan, who served as his offensive coordination in Atlanta.

Sanu, who also played with Cincinnati Bengals, has 403 career catches for 4,507 yards and 26 touchdowns.
