The San Francisco 49ers, who got off to a disappointing start in their 2020 season after an Opening Week loss to the Arizona Cardinals, got even more bad news on Wednesday after the news broke that they would have to place star cornerback Richard Sherman on injured reserve.

The veteran defensive back reportedly suffered a calf strain at some point during the 49ers’ loss on Sunday, although he did not exit the game at any point.

Sherman, who joined San Francisco prior to the 2018 season after a long and successful tenure with the Seattle Seahawks, was a star for the NFC winning Niners last season. The Stanford alum was a Pro Bowl selection after putting together a solid season which included 61 tackles, 11 passes defended, and 3 interceptions.

He was one of his team’s defensive cornerstones heading into the 2020 season, but those plans will have to be put on hold for now. The league mandates that players placed on injured reserve must miss at least 3 weeks of action, which could keep him out until mid-October.For now, the team is expected to go with a medley of other cornerbacks in Sherman’s stead including Emmanuel Moseley, Ahkello Witherspoon and K’Waun Williams.

The team hopes that Sherman will miss no longer than a month.
