The San Francisco 49ers revealed on Sunday that star quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has suffered a season-ending injury.

Garoppolo broke his left foot during the 49ers’ 33-17 win over the Miami Dolphins. With 8:39 left in the second quarter, Garoppolo had to come off after being sacked by Dolphins linebacker Jerome Baker and end Jaelan Phillips. While Garoppolo attempted to keep his momentum going forward, his foot got caught under Phillips as he was taken down.

“I saw him at halftime and I was pretty emotional,” defensive end Nick Bosa admitted. “It sucks. Kind of similar to how I was feeling in 2020 [when I suffered a season-ending ACL injury]. I couldn’t get it off of my mind. I just kind of had to force myself to block it out and keep going.”

Following Garoppolo’s injury, the quarterback will have to undergo season-ending surgery. This is the third time since 2018 that he has had to finish a season on injured reserve.

Replacing Garoppolo as quarterback on Sunday was rookie Brock Purdy, who threw his first NFL touchdown pass on his first drive. He finished the game with 25-of-37 for 210 yards and two scores with an interception for a passer rating of 88.8.
