Veteran linebacker Kiko Alonso won’t get a chance to suit up for the San Francisco 49ers.

Alonso landed in San Francisco in a trade that sent Kwon Alexander to New Orleans Saints in early November. But on Monday, the team announced that the 30-year-old player has been waived with a failed physical designation.

Alonso is currently recovering from a torn ACL, which he suffered during the 2019 NFL playoffs, and reportedly isn’t close to returning to action. This, coupled with the fact that he is in the final year of his deal, made it easier for the 49ers to decide to move on from him.

After an impressive college career with Oregon, which included Second-team All-Pac-12 selection, Kiko Alonso was selected in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft by Buffalo Bills. He ended up starting all 16 games in his rookie season, contributing with 159 tackles, 2.0 sacks, and four interceptions.

Alonso didn’t manage to build on his promising rookie campaign as he tore his ACL during an offseason workout. He missed the entire season while rehabbing, and this ultimately marked the end of his career in Buffalo.

He later played with Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Dolphins, and Saints, being a solid contributor in all of these places.
