San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert will be ruled out of action for the remainder of the current season, due to requiring minor arthroscopic surgery on his knee.

Mostert took to Twitter to announce this news, which invalidates the 49ers’ previous update which explained that Mostert would only be out of action for eight weeks.

The 29-year-old running back was injured during the 49ers’ 41-33 victory against the Detriot Lions at the Ford Field in Michigan on Sunday.

While Niners coach Kyle Shanahan announced on Monday that Mostert would miss eight weeks due to a “chipped cartilage” in the knee, Mostert later decided that it would be wise to seek out a more permanent solution to the problem, even if it meant taking a longer recovery time.

Now that Mostert will not be eligible for selection, the San Francisco 49ers will be forced to seek a long-term replacement for the 29-year-old running back. In addition to signing running back Kerryon Johnson to their practice squad Tuesday, the 49ers also have rookies Elijah Mitchell and Trey Sermon and second-year pro JaMycal Hasty, all of whom they can turn to as members of their active roster.
