Following much speculation, San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that while he planned to rely on Jimmy Garoppolo, the 29-year-old’s injury means that Shanahan will have to turn to rookie quarterback Trey Lance in the meantime.

“We’ve been playing with rookie running backs since the second play of the first game and we’ve got a rookie quarterback right now,” a concerned Shanahan revealed. He furthermore explained that while he wanted to give Lance more time to develop, teams are not always afforded that opportunity.

Garoppolo suffered a calf injury during the 49ers’ 28-21 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The 49ers are currently struggling with numerous other injuries in addition to Garoppolo’s. These include kicker Robbie Gould’s groin injury as well as the right shoulder issue that left tackle Trent Williams is struggling with.

Garoppolo expressed disappointment when questioned about his injury. “I’ve been in this situation too many times and it’s getting real old,” Garoppolo stated.

Before his injury, Garoppolo had a record of 4-of-23 for 165 yards with one touchdown.
