Breakout San Francisco 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel was the victim of a tough break last week, suffering a broken foot during a workout session with teammates in Nashville, Tennessee which required surgery.

The fracture, which is located between the middle part and base of his left foot’s fifth metatarsal bone, required a surgical procedure to fix which Samuel stated, “went great.”

Samuel was one of the key figures in San Francisco’s 13-3 regular season and Super Bowl run last season, establishing himself as one of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s main wideout targets. He caught 57 passes for 802 yards, scoring three touchdowns.

He also established himself as a threat in the running game, scoring three touchdowns while rushing to bring his total score count to six.

The South Carolina native, who was the 36th overall pick in last year’s NFL draft, was named to the 2019 PFF All Rookie Team in recognition of his outstanding rookie campaign.

While no official injury timeline was given by Samuel or the team, recoveries from surgeries of this sort typically take 6-10 weeks, which would put the wideout’s training camp status in jeopardy.

Niners fans, teammates, and brass will certainly hope that the injury doesn’t prevent Samuel from taking the field with his team at the beginning of the season.
