Veteran center back Simon Kjaer will extend his stay with AC Milan for two more years. Seria A side announced on Wednesday that they have acquired Kjaer on a permanent basis, with the Denmark captain inking a contract through 2021/22 season.

Kjaer initially joined Milan in January on a six-months loan from Sevilla. The 31-year-old quickly became an important piece in manager Stefano Pioli’s back four and ended up making 13 appearances, including 11 starts.

Milan was more than happy with Kjaer’s performances and decided to exercise the option to get him permanently. Reportedly, the transfer was worth around $4 million.

AC Milan are currently engaged in a tough fight for a spot in European competitions next season. They are sitting at No.7 in Seria A, being two points behind Napoli, who hold the last Europa League spot. There are still six games to be played in Italy before the end of the 2019/20 season.

Simon Kjaer has been considered a journeyman for most of his career, playing for nine clubs in six different leagues in Europe. Kjaer’s most prominent stops include AS Roma, VfL Wolfsburg, and Lille alongside Sevilla and Milan.

Kjaer also has 95 appearances with Denmark’s national team. He has been the country’s captain since the 2018 World Cup.
