Adam Lallana will be part of the Premier League-winning team after all. Liverpool announced on Monday that Lallana signed a short-term extension which will enable him to see through the end of the 2019/20 season with the club.

Lallana’s contract was set to expire at the end of June, and Liverpool already decided they won’t give him a new contract. However, with the Premier League season pushed-back due to coronavirus pandemic and the club needing only six points to clinch the title, the 32-year-old got to extend his stay on Anfield.

“I know how highly sought after Adam is in this moment by other clubs who want him for next season, so for him this is a commitment to us and we are very appreciative to him for it,” said Liverpool’s manager Jürgen Klopp. “This is absolutely how it should be, too, because I am so pleased he will be with us to finish the job this season and have the farewell he deserves so much.”

Lallana joined Liverpool in 2014 from Southampton. Since then, the English midfielder played 178 games with the club, scoring 22  goals. He helped Liverpool win three trophies, including the UEFA Champions League title during the 2018/19 season.

“I am really pleased to have the chance to finish this season – it means a lot to me and my family,” said Lallana. “Now isn’t the moment to review my time here because the focus needs to be on the remaining nine matches and the club finishing the season in the best manner possible.”

Lallana is expected to remain in the Premier League, with Leicester reportedly interested in his services. A return to Southampton is also on the cards, as he previously stated he would like to end his career with the club.
