The United States Men’s National Team pulled off a huge coup on Monday after receiving word that Ajax right-back Sergino Dest has decided to represent the Stars and Stripes internationally going forward.

Dest, who has become a fixture in the Dutch champions’ starting lineup at the ripe age of 18, announced via his team that he would choose to represent the United States during his international career after debating between the Americans and the Netherlands national team.

Dutch coach Ronald Koeman attempted to convince Dest to represent the country of his birth at the international level, but Dest was determined to stick with the team that he has represented at various youth levels.

The young right-back has impressed with Ajax, competing in a total of 16 games so far this year in his debut with the senior team.

Dest was born and grew up in the Netherlands after being born in the country to a Surinamese-American father and a Dutch mother. Despite his Dutch upbringing and heritage, he played for the United States’ U17 and U20 national teams before appearing in a pair of friendlies for the American senior team last month.

Now, the young player’s international future is officially decided, and he’ll look to become a part of the generation of young American talents that leads the team to international glory.
