After 90 minutes past, Cristiano Ronaldo and his Juventus teammates looked towards the ground, their faces a mixture of shock and disbelief.

They couldn’t believe that they had lost 1-2 at home to an upstart Ajax, eliminating them from the Champions League much earlier than anyone had thought possible.

Ajax traveled to Turin and beat Juventus in what is one of the most surprising results in Champions League history. They have advanced to the semi-finals of the competition for the first time since 1997.

The Dutch outfit went down 1-0 in the 28th minute of the game. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a header as he went unmarked in the box, making it seem almost unfathomable that Ajax could win.

“Impossible” isn’t in Ajax’s dictionary, however, and the comeback began.

In the 34th minute, a Donny van de Beek goal knotted up the game for Ajax. Juventus was nervous, and their defense disjointed.

The teams went into the break knotted at 1, but that didn’t last. On a corner kick in the 67th minute of the game, Matthjis de Ligt headed a ball into the net, giving Ajax a 1-2 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.

Juventus is out of the competition, and Cristiano Ronaldo will miss out on the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2010.

Ajax will play the winner of the tie Manchester City and Tottenham in the semis.
