The Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement with Alex Cora for a three-year extension through the 2027 season, ESPN reported. The $21.75 million contract will make Cora the second highest-paid manager in the MLB.

Having helped the Red Sox to a 54-47 record, Cora has given the team hope for claiming the final American League wild-card spot, trailing the Kansas City Royals by just 1.5 games. Had he not agreed to an extension, Cora’s contract was due to lapse at the end of the season.

“I had a tremendous amount of respect for Alex long before I took this job; that respect has only grown these last several months,” chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said of Cora. “He is an incredible people connector, something I have enjoyed watching firsthand. He has embraced Boston’s passionate fans and we share a desire to win as much as they do, both in 2024 and in the future.”

Under Cora’s leadership, the Red Sox have significantly improved on their performances over the last two seasons, when they went 78-84 back-to-back and came in last in the American League East. The team’s performance under Cora has improved this season despite having their lowest Opening Day payroll over the past decade at a little over $170 million.
