Almost two years after his last NFL start, Alex Smith is becoming the starting quarterback for Washington Football Team once again. Although he would surely like the circumstances surrounding his return were more positive.

Smith is getting his job back after starter Kyle Allen got injured in Sunday’s 20-23 defeat to New York Giants. Allen suffered a dislocated ankle and an ankle fracture in the first quarter of the game following a tackle by Jabrill Peppers.

This was all too familiar scene for Smith, considering that his reign as Washington’s starting QB came back in November 2018 against Houston Texans, when he suffered a spiral and compound fracture to his tibia and fibula. The injury almost ended Smith’s football career, which is why he’s grateful to have the opportunity to step on the field once again.

“I’m enjoying every single day, and I’ve continued to progress and get better,” said Smith. “I’m thankful for that. It’s another step. I’m incredibly bummed for Kyle.”

Stepping in for Allen, Alex Smith put up solid numbers by completing 24 out of 32 passes attempted and throwing for 325 yards and one touchdown. But he also had three turnovers that sealed Washington’s chances of getting a win.

Smith believes his awareness will improve with more snaps under his legs, and he’s determined to prove he can still play at a high level.

“For me, I’m going full steam ahead,” he added. “I’m not thinking about any other stuff. I’m going to run with this opportunity.”
