Arsenal made a significant addition to their struggling back four on Tuesday, finalizing a $35 million transfer for Brazilian center-back Gabriel dos Santos Magalhaes.

The 22-year-old player comes to London after spending the previous three seasons with Ligue 1 side Lille. He enjoyed an impressive 2019/20 season in which he made 34 appearances in all competitions while managing to score one goal.

“So many fans were sending me messages asking me to join Arsenal, and that played a big part in me signing for this club,” said Gabriel after inking the deal. “I know the history and traditions of this club, and it is a pleasure being here. I am very happy and hope I can contribute to many titles with the Arsenal shirt.”

Thanks to his great showings with Lille, which got him the consideration of Brazil national team head coach Tite, Gabriel was a prominent target for center-back-needy teams this summer. Several high-profile clubs, including Napoli and Barcelona, considered making a move for the youngster, but Arsenal ended up being the most aggressive side.

Gabriel is expected to have a prominent role for the London club next season, especially since head coach Mikel Arteta wasn’t satisfied with his current options.

“We welcome Gabriel to Arsenal. He has many qualities which will make us stronger as a defensive unit and as a team,” said Arteta. “He has proved with Lille that he is a defender with many outstanding attributes, and we are looking forward to watching him grow as an Arsenal player.”
