Arsenal will not be able to count on Brazilian striker Gabriel Martinelli anymore this year. According to the club, Martinelli will be out until 2021 after undergoing knee surgery last month.

Martinelli injured his knee during a training shortly after the Premier League resumed its season in June. This put to an end his impressive debut campaign with Arsenal in which he scored 10 goals in 26 games in all competitions.

“He is currently at our training centre every day receiving specialist attention and support from our medical team and will continue his recovery throughout the close season, with the aim of a return to full training by the end of 2020,” said Arsenal in a statement.

Martinelli joined Arsenal back in the summer of 2019, in a transfer worth around $10 million from Brazil side Ituano. The 19-year-old player has a bright future predicted and is reportedly highly regarded by the club’s new coach Mikel Arteta.

The club also gave an update on Spanish defender Pablo Mari, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury. Mari made progress in his rehab and should be back to action once the 2020/21 season kicks off.
