Oakland Athletics decided not to wait for the end of the season to give their slugger Khris Davis a new deal. The team announced on Thursday that they have signed Davis to a two-year contract extension, which will keep him in Oakland at least through 2021.

Although Athletics did not disclose the financial terms of the deal, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the contract is worth $33.5 million. Davis is set to earn $16.75 million in 2019.

“Khris is a special talent who has made a tremendous impact both on and off the field during his time here,” – said Athletics’ executive vice president of baseball operations Billy Beane. “He’s become one of the most beloved players to have worn an A’s uniform, and his commitment to Oakland has never wavered. He made it clear from the beginning that he wants to play, and win, right here. We’re thrilled Khris will continue to be an A.”

Khris Davis opened the 2019 MLB season in an exceptional way by batting .260 and hitting league-high 10 home runs. This comes after he led the MLB in home runs last season with 48 and won the Edgar Martinez Award given to AL’s most outstanding designated hitter.

“Oakland has been a special place for me since I arrived,” – said Davis in a statement. “I love playing here in front of our fans, and my teammates make this feel like a family. I never hid the fact that I wanted to stay in Oakland because that is how I feel and I’m glad that I can continue to call the city of Oakland my baseball home.”

Davis joined Oakland Athletics in 2016 after spending the first three seasons of his MLB career with Milwaukee Brewers. His career stats include .248 batting average, 203 home runs and 517 RBIs.
