Atlanta Ace Soroka Out For Season

The Atlanta Braves have announced that their ace right-hander Mike Soroka will miss the remainder of the 2020 season.

According to the team, the star pitcher has torn his right Achilles tendon. Soroka started Monday night’s game against the New York Mets but left the game after just 2.1 innings. Soroka was visibly in pain after making a move towards first base, after which he fell down and was helped to the dugout while obviously favoring his left leg.

The young pitcher made his first start for the Braves in May 2018 after being selected in the 2015 draft as a 22-year-old prospect. He finished his impressive first full year with a 2.68 ERA in 29 starts and was off to an excellent start this year as well. Soroka was also named a National League All-Star and finished sixth in NL Cy Young Award voting in 2019.

No time table has been given for his return. The injury leaves the Braves’ pitching rotation very thin, with only four certain starters; Max Fried, Sean Newcomb, Touki Toussaint, and Kyle Wright.

Although the Braves have started the season off strong, the loss of their best pitcher shines a dim light on their season already and immediately hurts their chances of making the playoffs in this shortened 60-game season.
