The Atlanta Hawks have unveiled Quin Snyder as the franchise’s next head coach in an announcement made on Sunday. Snyder will replace Nate McMillan, who was fired last week after a series of bad results.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Snyder will ink a five-year contract with the franchise.

Snyder returns to the franchise with which he served as an assistant under Mike Budenholzer during the 2013-14 NBA season. He issued a statement after the news became official, saying that he is “thrilled” with the opportunity and excited to work with a talented team and general manager Landry Fields.

“I am thrilled to go back to Atlanta as the next head coach of the Hawks,” Snyder said in a statement. “Landry has a tremendous reputation as an incredibly bright, high character, high-quality individual, and it was quickly evident that we share a passion and commitment to building a winning team with a strong foundation and high standards.”

Snyder will be tasked with turning around the Hawks’ season and try to improve their chances of making the playoffs. Atlanta is currently at No.8 in the East and trails 3.5 games behind the New York Knicks on No.6, which is the last automatic postseason spot.

Still, the Hawks front office are not putting much emphasis on this campaign and have hired Snyder to set up the franchise for long-term success. They believe getting Snyder in the building early will help him evaluate the current state of the roster ahead of the offseason.

Quin Snyder previously spent eight seasons with the Jazz. During that time, Utah made the playoffs six times and went to Conference Semifinals three times. Snyder stepped away after the 2021-22 season with a 372-264 regular season record.
