Many great players have never won the World Cup and it appears that the name of Lionel Messi will be added to that list after Argentina fell to a 4-3 defeat against France during the last-16 of the World Cup on Saturday.

Though Argentina gave a competitive performance and fought till the end, they were outplayed by the Franch team, which was more adept in terms of skill, speed, youth and ultimately goals.

The chief destroyer for France on the day was Kylian Mbappe who went on to score two goals and also won the penalty to create the first goal which was scored by Antoine Griezmann.

France will meet Uruguay on Friday after the South American team secured a 2-1 win over Portugal later on during the day.

Argentina’s defense has been their weak point during this World Cup and they gave the likes of Mbappe, Griezmann and Olivier Giroud too much space on the day.

No African team has progressed beyond the group stage of the 2018 World Cup and this is the continent’s worst performance at a World Cup since 1982.

From all of the African nations in Russia, Senegal came the closest to advancing beyond the group stage and was unlucky not to do so. The reason Japan advanced ahead of them is that the Asians had picked up fewer yellow cards.

Nigeria had also come close to advancing beyond the group stages and would have done so had they beaten or drawn against Argentina during their final group stage match.

Three African teams- namely Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia were already knocked out of the tournament even before the final group stage games could begin. Egypt and Tunisia hardly looked up to the task.

Peru bowed out of the 2018 World Cup and ended Australia’s hopes of qualifying for the last-16 as they won 2-0 in their final Group C clash on Tuesday.

Australia needed to win the game and hope that France defeated Denmark if they were to advance to the last-16.

The Socceroos started the game in promising fashion as they had a lot of possession as they went in search of an early goal. Peru took the lead after 18 minutes as Paolo Guerrero delivered a cross to Andrea Carrillo who struck a powerful shot beyond Matt Ryan.

Ten minutes later, the Socceroos were denied an equalizer as Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese produced a brilliant save to deny Tom Rogic.

Australia continued to create chances and Matthew Leckie missed a golden opportunity during the 34th minute.

Five minutes after the second half, Guerrero got himself onto the scoresheet.

The Socceroos bow out of Russia in disappointing fashion. This marks the third successive World Cup during which they have exited during the group stage.

Mexico recorded a 2-1 over South Korea in the World Cup on Saturday to book their place in the World Cup.

Many had doubts about the current Mexican team before the start of the World Cup as they had been put into a group alongside Germany and Sweden.

El Tri were handed a fortunate penalty during the 25th minute after South Korea’s Jang Hyun-Soo was judged to have handled the ball in the area and Carlos Vela made no mistake in converting from the spot.

The impressive Hirving Lozano launched an impressive attack during the second half as he carried the ball through the field before passing to former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez who doubled the lead during the 66th minute.

Tottenham star Heung Son-Min scored a goal during stoppage time to pull one back for his side but the Mexicans managed to hold out for a 2-1 victory.

Mexico has now won both of their World Cup games thus far and have all but assured themselves of a place in the last 16.

Billy Joe Saunders has withdrawn from his WBO Middleweight title defense against Martin Murray on June 23rd due to injury.

The fight, which was scheduled to take place at the O2 arena in London, has been canceled for the second time. It was first moved from March to June after Saunders had suffered a hand injury while he was training.

Murray believes that Saunders has intentionally canceled the bout in order to earn a match against Gennady Golovkin. Golovkin’s re-match against Canelo Alvarez is being delayed due to payment disagreements and in the end, Canelo may end up choosing another opponent which could be Saunders. Golovkin is under pressure to find mandatory challengers for his two middleweight belts if the Alvarez match falls through.

If Murray ends up fighting Golovkin, the fight will likely take place at a big venue, possibly the London Stadium.

Alvarez will also need a credible opponent for his Mexico Independence Day fight in Las Vegas on September 15.

Former Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn admitted that he fears for the career of Liverpool shot-stopper Loris Karius following the Reds 3-1 defeat during the final of the Uefa Champions League on Saturday.

Karius had an horror game as he gifted Madrid with the first goal as well as their third.

His miss-throw allowed Karim Benzema to block the ball into the net for Madrid’s opener while he also parried a long-range shot from Gareth Bale into the net for Madrid’s third which all but sealed the trophy for Zinedine Zidane’s men.

“I’m lost for words,” Kahn said, speaking on ZDF. “I can’t remember having experienced something more brutal from a goalkeeping point of view than in this final. An evening like this can destroy a career.”

If there is one person who will be able to relate to Karius, it is Khan. Khan delivered sublime performances for Germany during the 2002 World Cup and won the Golden Ball award at the event. However, his goalkeeping mistakes during the final allowed Brazil’s Ronaldo to score twice and gifted his country the title.

Eddie Hearn has said that the long-awaited fight between Amir Khan and Kell Brook is likely to take place in 2019 as both men are chasing titles in their respective divisions.

Brook and Khan have had a fierce rivalry for many years, however, organizing a fight will be difficult. Their popularity has declined due to their defeats. Brook lost popularity following his defeats against Errol Spence Jr. and Gennady Golovkin while Khan lost popularity following his T.K.O defeat against Canelo Alvarez in May 2016 before he came back this year and quickly defeated Phil Lo Greco.

Furthermore, both men are in different weight divisions. The 31-year-old Khan only wants to fight at 147 while Brook fights at 154.

Brook competed at 147 last year and did not do well as he went on to be defeated against Errol Spence Jr. via 11th round knockout.

It is likely that Khan is going to want a title shot and aim to fight the winner of the July 15 bout between WBA World welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse and Manny Pacquiao.

Everton has parted ways with manager Sam Allardyce.

Allardyce was appointed as manager of the club in November after they were flirting with relegation.

Under the guidance of Allardyce, the performances of the Toffees improved and they ended off finishing the Premier League in a respectable eighth position. Many fans of the club were however unhappy with the style of play that Allardyce orchestrated. There were also concerns over whether Allardyce would be able to match the clubs ambitions.

Everton is a club that is pushing to ensure that it finishes strongly on the top half of the standings. Through Allardyce’s managerial career, he has been mainly managing clubs who finish on the bottom half of the standings or who aim to avoid relegation.

“We have made the decision that, as part of our longer-term plan, we will be appointing a new manager this summer,” said new chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale.

“On behalf of the chairman, board of directors and Mr Moshiri, I’d like to thank Sam for the job he has done at Everton.”

“Sam was brought in at a challenging time last season to provide us with some stability and we are grateful to him for doing that,” she added.
