Peru bowed out of the 2018 World Cup and ended Australia’s hopes of qualifying for the last-16 as they won 2-0 in their final Group C clash on Tuesday.

Australia needed to win the game and hope that France defeated Denmark if they were to advance to the last-16.

The Socceroos started the game in promising fashion as they had a lot of possession as they went in search of an early goal. Peru took the lead after 18 minutes as Paolo Guerrero delivered a cross to Andrea Carrillo who struck a powerful shot beyond Matt Ryan.

Ten minutes later, the Socceroos were denied an equalizer as Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese produced a brilliant save to deny Tom Rogic.

Australia continued to create chances and Matthew Leckie missed a golden opportunity during the 34th minute.

Five minutes after the second half, Guerrero got himself onto the scoresheet.

The Socceroos bow out of Russia in disappointing fashion. This marks the third successive World Cup during which they have exited during the group stage.
