Colorado Avalanche’s star defenseman Cale Makar was selected to appear on the cover of the video game NHL 24. The new installment of the popular video game franchise, developed by EA Sports, will be released in October.

Makar shared the news on social media, posting a photo of the cover.

Makar will only be the third defenseman to be selected as the NHL video game’s cover athlete. Dion Phaneuf got the honor for NHL 09, while P.K. Subban appeared on the cover of NHL 19.

“It’s so cool,” Makar said in a chat with ESPN after the news was confirmed. “When they were considering me to be a part of this, it was just kind of like a ‘wow’ moment. You grow up, you play all these games.”

Cale Makar established himself as one of the most exciting young defensemen in the league since being selected fourth overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Makar made his debut in 2019–20 and won Calder Memorial Trophy as the rookie of the year. He also has James Norris Memorial Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy on his resume after helping Avalanche win Stanley Cup in 2022.

Makar has played 238 regular-season games in NHL and has 65 goals and 181 assists for a total of 246 points. He also added 65 points in the postseason.
