La Liga giants Barcelona officially unveiled former Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick as their new head coach. Flick, who signed a two-year deal with Barca, will replace club legend Xavi at the position.

By hiring Flick, Barcelona puts an end to months of uncertainty revolving around its managerial post. Initially, Xavi announced in January that he’d be leaving the club at the end of the season, citing pressure and poor results as reasons. However, Xavi would go on to reverse his decision in April following a 13-game unbeaten run and meeting with Barca’s brass, saying he would honor his contract and stay until the summer of 2025.

But things took another turn last week when Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, opted to fire Xavi. Reportedly, Laporta made the move because of Xavi’s public comments about the club’s difficult financial situation as well as the belief that Barca would benefit from a different approach.

Hansi Flick is best known for his time with Bayern, leading the club to treble in 2019–20 by winning Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, and UEFA Champions League. Flick followed that up with another Bundesliga title in 2020–21 before deciding to leave the club and take over Germany’s national team.

Flick struggled to continue his winning ways with Germany, failing to progress past the group stage at the 2022 FIFA World Cup while also recording a string of poor results after the tournament. He was fired from his position in September, becoming the first Germany manager to end his stint in this manner.
