Despite being one of the biggest soccer clubs in the world, Bayern Munich is known to be cautious when it comes to spending. However, that perception might change after this summer as the Bundesliga powerhouse just wrapped up a transfer for Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus that could end up being worth €77 million.

Bayern beat out Premier League’s Chelsea for de Ligt’s signature and will initially pay €67 million to Juve. Another €10 million might head to Turin based on the add-ons.

“I felt the genuine appreciation from the sporting management, the coach, and the board right from the start, which convinced me,” said de Ligt about his decision to snub Chelsea for Bayern. “On top of that, FC Bayern is a brilliantly run club with big aims. I’m very glad that I’m now becoming part of the FC Bayern story.”

By spending a near-record amount of money on de Ligt, Bayern has continued to spend heavily ahead of the 2022-23 season. The Germans previously also shelled out €41 million to get star forward Sadio Mane from Liverpool while paying €25 million to Ajax for midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

Matthijs de Ligt previously spent three seasons in Seria A, making 117 appearances and scoring eight goals for Juve. He also helped the club win Seria A and Coppa Italia trophies.
