The news that the Wilpon family was looking to sell the New York Mets has been public since late 2019, but now the sale is apparently official.

The family has announced that it has sold the MLB franchise to Steve Cohen, a lifelong Mets fan but, most importantly, a billionaire.

Cohen will be paying $2.4 billion to buy the team. Cohen has been the front-runner to buy the team since the Wilpons announces they were willing to sell.

In the earlier stages of talks, it appeared that it was all but certain that Cohen would get the deal done. However, other interested parties entered the conversation in February, most notably former MLB superstar Alex Rodriguez and his equally famous wife Jennifer Lopez.

Mets fans have wanted the Wilpon family to sell for quite some time now, believing that they did not have the interest or the money to spend in order to sign quality players to the team. Cohen, who is worth roughly $11 billion, certainly has a lot more money than the Wilpons.

Mets fans hope that he will be willing to invest in building a strong roster that can compete for a World Series title in the not-so-distance future.
