Bundesliga powerhouse Borussia Dortmund announced on Sunday that they have fired their manager Lucien Favre. The decision was due to the team’s poor form in recent weeks and an embarrassing 1-5 loss at home to Stuttgart.

Borussia also confirmed that assistant Edin Terzic will take over the managerial duties on an interim basis until the end of the season. Terzic will be helped by assistants Otto Addo and Sebastian Geppert.

“We are all grateful for Lucien Favre and his excellent work over the past two and a half years, where he and his team finished as runner-up twice,” said Borussia’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke in a statement. “Beyond any doubt, Lucien Favre is a great professional and person.”

Borussia Dortmund entered the 2020-21 Bundesliga season with ambitions to challenge for the title and finally put the end to Bayern Munich’s supremacy in the league. But although they had a promising start, things have looked less than ideal in recent weeks.

In the last five Bundesliga matches, Borussia only managed to capture one win while losing three games. This got them to No.5 on the standings, and they are already trailing leaders Bayer Leverkusen by six points.

Lucien Favre took over the club in the 2018-19 season and has led the club to two consecutive second places in Bundesliga. He managed to get one trophy during his time in Dortmund, winning the DFL-Supercup in 2019.
