The Atlanta Braves, who are dealing with the fallback of Felix Hernandez’s decision not to play in the 2020 season and Cole Hamels’ shoulder problems, have opted to sign veteran starter Jhoulys Chacin to a one-year deal in order to shore up their rotation depth.

The Venezuela native will spend his second stint in Atlanta this season after making five starts for the team in the 2016 season, compiling a 1-2 record and a 5.40 ERA before being traded to the Los Angeles Angels.

The 6’3″ righty is perhaps best known for his half-decade as a rotation fixture for the Colorado Rockies, where he broke into the Big Leagues in 2009.

Chacin was a solid mid-rotation starter in 2017 and 2018 with the Padres and Brewers, respectively, putting together a 28-18 record with a 3.67 ERA in 67 starts over those two seasons.

2019, however, was a nightmare for Chacin as he bounced between the Brewers and Red Sox and posted an unsightly 6.01 ERA in 24 starts thanks in large start to struggles with the home run ball.

Chacin will look to break into the Braves’ rotation and re-establish himself as a dependable starter on a potential World Series contender in 2020.
