Brett Brown announced that he would be stepping down from his position as head coach of the Australian Boomers national basketball team with immediate effect. This comes just months prior to the commencement of the rescheduled 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

This sudden and unexpected move came as a result of a change in personal circumstance, thus rendering Brown incapable of committing to train the Australian men’s national team ahead of the Olympics.

With regards to his decision, Brown made the following statement: “This was a difficult decision which did not come easy. The uncertainties around the direction of my professional future, unfortunately, mean that I cannot commit to the time and preparation that this job deserves and requires. The difficulties around traveling internationally with my family during the pandemic have also contributed to my decision.”

Since the 1990s, Brown has been involved in the training of the Australian Boomers. After a coaching stint in the 90s, Brown coached the Boomers again in the early 2000s and again from 2009 to 2012, when he moved on to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Brown’s decision came two months after he was fired from the Philadelphia 76ers following the team’s first-round postseason sweep at the hands of the Boston Celtics.
