Denver Broncos will have All-Pro safety Justin Simmons on their team at least for one more season. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on Friday that Simmons accepted his franchise tag and that he’ll sign it by the end of the week.

Broncos wanted to sign Simmons on a long-term deal, but two sides couldn’t come up to an agreement by March. The team then placed a franchise tag on the 26-year-old in order to ensure he doesn’t hit the free-agent market.

By signing his franchise tender, Simmons now commits himself to playing in Denver in 2020 and will earn around $11.4 million for the season. The two sides still have one week to agree to an extension in order to avoid the tag coming into action.

Justin Simmons earned a Second-Team All-Pro selection in 2019 and was one of Denver Broncos’ main playmakers on the defense last season. He played all 16 games, racking up 93 tackles and career-high four interceptions and 15 pass deflections.

Now, Simmons reportedly wants to be paid according to his performance and is commanding top safety money. This would mean that Broncos need to offer him around $14 million a year, something that the franchise still hasn’t been willing to do.
