After agreeing on a trade for quarterback Joe Flacco mid-February, Denver Broncos were trying to figure out what to do with 2018’s QB starter Case Keenum. The decision ended up being the trade, as Broncos reportedly shipped Keenum and seventh-round pick to Washington Redskins in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Keenum reworked his contract with the Broncos and will join Washington on a one-year deal. The 31-year-old was set to count $21 million against Denver’s salary cap and was set to earn a base salary of $18 million with $7 million guaranteed. The latter amount was split evenly between Broncos and Redskins in order to facilitate the move.

After impressive 2017 season with Minnesota Vikings, Case Keenum joined Denver Broncos in 2018 on a two-year, $36 million deal. He, however, failed to replicate the same performances from Minnesota with the Broncos ending the year with a record of 6-10. Keenum completed 62.3 percent of his passes for 3,890 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2018.

Despite his struggles last season, Keenum might represent a key component in Washington Redskins’ attempt to get back to the playoffs. Redskins were close to making the postseason last year, but their starting quarterback Alex Smith suffered an injury in Week 11 and was ruled out for the season. Due to recovery complications, Smith might not be able to play football ever again, so Washington decided that an experienced QB on their roster won’t hurt.
