Boston Bruins’ captain Zdeno Chara isn’t thinking about retiring from hockey despite the fact that he’ll turn 44 next year.

Speaking with reporters on a video conference on Thursday, Chara said that he wants to keep playing in NHL.

“I feel strong physically, and I’m positive, and I believe I can still play this game and contribute to the team,” said Chara, who appeared in 68 games in 2019/20, contributing with five goals and nine assists.

Chara is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, having played out his one-year, $2 million extension he signed back in March 2019. This will be the first time he is out of contract since joining the Bruins in 2006/07.

“I want to be a Boston Bruin,” he added. “I want to continue to lead by example and share my experiences and my game skills with the younger players and my teammates. That hasn’t changed. I’m committed, and we’ll see what’s going to happen next.”

Zdeno Chara made five out of his six All-Star appearances with the Bruins while helping the franchise to win the Stanley Cup in 2011. He also spent time with New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators since entering the NHL more than 20 years ago.

Chara played 1,553 NHL career games and has scored 205 goals while dishing 451 assists.
