Todd Reirden was fired as head coach by the Washington Capitals on Sunday. This decision comes three days after the Capitals were eliminated at the hands of the New York Islanders after five games of Stanley Cup Playoff first-round action.

Capitals General Manager Brian MacLellan had the following to say regarding the dismissal, “We would like to thank Todd for all of his hard work and efforts with our organization. Todd has been a big part of our team for more than half a decade, including our Stanley Cup run in 2018, and we wish him and his family all the best moving forward.”

Reirden’s appointment as a head coach came June 29, 2018, prior to which he served as the Capitals’ assistant coach for four seasons under head coach Barry Trotz. After Trotz was unable to agree on a new contract deal with the Capitals, Reirden was handed the reigns as the new coach. Coincidentally, it was Trotz who lead the Islanders to victory over Reirden’s side.

The Capitals managed to score eight goals in five games against the Islanders, managing a 3-2 victory in Game 4. Unfortunately, discipline and chemistry remained an issue for the team, as the Islanders enjoyed an emphatic 4-0 victory in their final clash.
