Chicago Fire emerged as an unexpected favorite so sign Manchester City’s star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne. The MLS side is already discussing a Designated Player contract with De Bruyne and Fire is believed to be his first choice if he decides to take his talents to the United States according to Paul Tenorio of The Athletic.

De Bruyne is out of contract with Man City this summer and has already announced that he will leave the club. There is significant interest in his services in Europe, including the Premier League, but Fire is feeling optimistic about their chances at the time. De Bruyne will also have suitors in Saudi Arabia but the player would prefer to move to MLS.

Inter Miami currently holds De Bruyne’s discovery rights, which give them exclusive negotiation rights. The two sides briefly discussed a potential deal but it remains unlikely at the time considering Miami has all of its DP slots filled out.

Several other MLS sides have an interest in De Bruyne, including D.C. United and New York City FC, but Tenorio reports that Fire currently has a priority.

After missing a good chunk of 2023-24 due to a hamstring injury, Kevin De Bruyne was slow to return to form this season. He has six goals and eight assists in 36 games he played in all competitions.

Bruce Arena believes that U.S. Soccer made the wrong choice when it hired Mauricio Pochettino as the new head coach of the United States men’s national team last year.

Pochettino was considered a big coup for U.S. Soccer when he took over the USMNT from Gregg Berhalter. However, a recent poor run, which included losses to Panama and Canada in the Concacaf Nations League, prompted questions about his fit for the role.

Speaking at the Unfiltered Soccer podcast, hosted by USMNT legends Landon Donovan and Tim Howard, Arena expressed his own reservations about Pochettino.

“If you look at every national team in the world, the coach is usually a domestic coach,” said Arena. “And I think when you have coaches that don’t know our culture, our players, our environment, it’s hard. And listen, (Pochettino) is a very good coach. (But) coaching international football is completely different than club football.”

Arena explained that he believes Pochettino lacks familiarity with the environment he is coaching in.

“If you’re an American coaching the U.S. team, you know the culture, the pride, and how important the national team is. When you bring in somebody from the outside, they don’t understand it. Especially in our country, because we’re so different,” he added.

Bruce Arena himself is the most successful head coach in USMNT history. During his two terms at the helm, he oversaw 81 wins and won three Gold Cup titles. Arena also helmed USMNT at two World Cups, reaching the quarterfinals in 2002 and failing to get out of the group stage in 2006.

Premier League giants Liverpool are confident that they will sign Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk to new contracts according to a report by soccer insider Fabrizio Romano.

Salah and van Dijk were previously expected to leave the Reds when their contracts expire at the end of the season. However, Liverpool made significant progress in talks with both players in recent periods and they are now set to remain with the club beyond the 2024-25 season.

Romano added that right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is also out of contract in the summer, is closing on a deal with La Liga powerhouse Real Madrid.

Managing to keep Salah and van Dijk is a major win for Liverpool. They were crucial in the team’s success in past years while also being a huge reason why the club is closing in on a Premier League title this season.

Salah has been playing some of his best soccer in 2024-25 despite the fact that he’ll turn 33 in June. Egypt international scored 27 goals and added 17 assists in 31 matches in the Premier League so far. Overall, he has 32 goals and 22 assists in all competitions.

Van Dijk, on the other hand, has been as reliable as ever. He played every match and fronted a defense that allowed the second-fewest goals in the Premier League so far in the campaign.

French star forward Antoine Griezmann is expected to delay his arrival in MLS until 2026. According to Football Espana’s Ruben Ulia, Griezmann decided to play at least one more season with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid before coming to the United States.

Griezmann publicly spoke about his desire to play in MLS on several occasions in the past. This started to look like a real possibility this summer after LAFC reportedly engaged in advanced talks with his representatives at the beginning of 2025 and felt increasingly optimistic about their chances to bring Griezmann.

However, Griezmann, who has one year left on his contract with Atletico after this season, had a change of heart. Remaining a prominent piece in Diego Simeone’s team, he wants to have one more run in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League and then move on.

Still, Griezmann doesn’t want to stay with Atletico at all costs. If he ends up feeling that his playing time will diminish next season or that the club would benefit from shedding his wages in the summer, he will turn once again to MLS.

Despite turning 34 in March, Antoine Griezmann has been a key player for Atletico in their challenge for the La Liga title this season by scoring eight goals and providing five assists. He also added six goals and two assists in 10 UEFA Champions League appearances.

Defending champions Real Madrid are through to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after beating their city rivals Atletico Madrid on penalties on Wednesday night. Real is the last team to punch the ticket to the next stage, with all UCL quarter-final matchups now being set.

Real entered the match in a comfortable position thanks to a 2-1 win in the first leg. However, Atletico needed less than a minute in the rematch to erase that advantage thanks to a goal from midfielder Connor Gallagher.

It appeared that the score set the stage for a thrilling game, but that didn’t turn out to be the case as both teams took a cautious approach. Vinicius Junior had an opportunity to get Real ahead on aggregate once again in the 70th minute but ended up missing a penalty.

Neither team managed to score another goal for the rest of the regular time and extra time, which led to a penalty shootout.

Real emerged victorious, converting four of their five penalties with Antonio Rudiger scoring the deciding penalty kick. Meanwhile, Atletico saw Julian Alvarez’s penalty score nixed due to a slip and double-kick, while Marcos Llorente hit the crossbar.

Real Madrid will now face Arsenal in the quarter-finals. Other matchups include Paris Saint-Germain going up against Aston Villa, Barcelona facing Borussia Dortmund, and Inter Milan playing Bayern Munich.

Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur opted to pass on their option to make forward Timo Werner’s loan move permanent in the summer. This represents great news for MLS teams, who are keen on bringing Werner to the United States.

Werner initially joined Tottenham from Bundesliga’s RB Leipzig in January 2024 on a six-month loan that was later renewed for the 2024-25 season. As part of the agreement between the two clubs, the Spurs received an option to make the move permanent for a fee of £8.5 million ($10.78 million).

However, Werner failed to make an impact for Tottenham this season, scoring just one goal in 27 appearances in all competitions. He also missed significant time due to a hamstring injury.

RB Leipzig is unlikely to have a place for Werner in its squad next season and will likely be willing to let him walk for free or at a steep discount. If that ends up being the case, several MLS clubs are likely to be interested in the 28-year-old German.

The New York Red Bulls are reportedly considered to be the favorites for Werner’s signature, having already held exploratory talks with his representatives. However, the move is facing several obstacles as Werner might ask for a significant financial package while there is still doubt whether he is ready to leave Europe at this point in his career.

FC Cincinnati parted ways with Argentinean attacking midfielder Luciano Acosta on Wednesday, trading the 2023 MLS MVP to FC Dallas for $5 million in cash.

Acosta’s trade also includes $1 million in added incentives and a percentage of future transfer if he’s moved to another MLS team in the future.

Cincinnati and Dallas took advantage of trading tweaks introduced by MLS for the 2025 season to pull off the deal. Unlike previous seasons, teams can now trade for players using cash instead of assets like draft picks or general allocation money (GAM). Players involved in these types of deals receive 10% of the cash amount.

“This is a landmark signing for FC Dallas and a statement of our commitment to building a championship-caliber team,” FC Dallas president Dan Hunt said in a statement. “Bringing in a player of Lucho’s caliber –- an MVP and proven leader -– demonstrates our ambition and desire to compete at the highest level. We are thrilled to welcome him to the FC Dallas family and cannot wait to see him inspire our fans and teammates alike.”

Luciano Acosta came to MLS in 2016 joining D.C. United from Boca Juniors. He went on to spend four seasons with D.C., earning MLS Best XI nod in 2018. After his contract expired following the 2019 campaign, Acosta signed with Mexican club Atlas.

Acosta returned to MLS after just one year, joining FC Cincinnati on a Designated Player deal. He would go on to play the best stretch of his career, earning three consecutive MLS All-Star appearances and MLS Best XI honors. He was also named the MLS MVP for the 2023 season after scoring 19 goals and dishing 12 assists.

The past season saw Acosta playing on a high level as well, as he finished the 2024 campaign with 12 goals and a career-high 17 assists.

Despite all the reports linking him to MLS, it appears that Brazil’s star striker Neymar won’t be coming to the United States. Instead, Neymar is reportedly close to returning to his boyhood club Santos.

Neymar is currently under contract with Saudi Arabia side Al Hilal but the two sides are negotiating an early termination. Neymar joined Al Hilal in a $98 million transfer in the summer of 2023 from Paris Saint-Germain but only played seven games for the club due to various injuries.

If Neymar and Al Hilal reach contract termination, the Brazilian would give up around $65 million in wages. He is expected to sign a six-month contract with Santos that would contain an option to extend it for one more year.

Neymar recently had exploratory talks with at least three MLS clubs including Chicago Fire as he looks to bounce back after a challenging period and regain his place in Brazil’s national team. However, his priority has always been returning to his home country and those talks didn’t progress further after Santos expressed interest in reunion.

Neymar joined Santos’ youth team in 2003 and made his professional debut in 2009 as a 17-year-old. He spent five seasons with the club, scoring 136 goals in 225 games while helping Santos win Copa Libertadores, Copa do Brasil, and three Campeonato Paulista titles. He left the club in 2013 to join La Liga powerhouse Barcelona in a $55.3 million transfer.

With Barcelona, Neymar won two La Liga titles and one UEFA Champions League trophy before departing to PSG in 2017 for a world-record $263 million. During his time in France, he won five Ligue 1 titles.

Neymar is also Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, having 79 goals in 128 international matches.

Manchester City faced many obstacles this season, and they suffered one of the biggest blows yet against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night. Their face-off at the Parc des Princes resulted in a shocking loss for the English team, putting them on the brink of UCL elimination.

After a goalless first half, Man City made a glorious return in the second half, securing a 2-0 lead thanks to Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland. It took them just seven minutes to blow the lead, as PSG managed to level the score after Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola netted two goals. Joao Neves and Goncalo Ramos helped the French side cross the finish line and score a shocking 4-2 victory against Man City.

Man City’s Pep Guardiola praised PSG’s performance on Wednesday night and admitted they were better this time around.

“We had our moments and they had their moments, but they were better. They were quicker, faster, they won the duels, we could not cope. They were fast. The best team won. The game was never like we wanted,” Guardiola told TNT Sports.

Man City is on the brink of Champions League elimination after losing to PSG, and they’ll have to defeat Club Brugge at home next Wednesday to stay in the league.

Atlanta United is interested in reuniting with Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almiron. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the MLS side already made a $13.5 million bid to Newcastle United for Almiron and is now awaiting a response.

The deal is expected to come together in the coming days, and both Almiron and Newcastle are in favor of the move.

The minor issue Atlanta would need to overcome is the fact that Almiron’s discovery rights are currently owned by Charlotte FC. It is expected that Charlotte will waive its rights in exchange for compensation.

Miguel Almiron played with Atlanta United between 2016 and 2018, helping the club to win the MLS Cup in 2018 and earning a pair of MLS Best XI honors. Almiron’s stellar performances helped him secure an MLS-record $27 million transfer to Newcastle in January 2019.

Almiron needed some time to adjust to Premier League football but ended up playing a key role in Newcastle’s run to fourth-place finish during the 2022-23 campaign with 11 goals. However, this season saw Almiron being used sparsely and starting only four games in all competitions.

Newcastle is motivated to part ways with Almiron as his sale will help the club get in line with Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. The player, on the other hand, is also keep on change of scenery in order to secure regular playing time.
