Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani booked Manchester United’s spot in the Carabao Cup semi-final after breaking the deadlock with a 2-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park.

On what was a bitterly cold Wednesday night, it took until the 88th minute for Manchester United to make it happen. While the visitors had a massive 19 shots compared to Everton’s seven, they struggled to find the back of the net over the course of a fairly dull performance.

With the game headed for penalties, Cavani picked up the ball on the right-wing and sprinted down the flank before switching to his left foot and firing the ball past an unsuspecting goalie into the back of the net.

In the 96th minute, Anthony Martial doubled United’s lead in what was virtually the last kick of the game. In a rapid counter-attack, Marcus Rashford threaded the ball through to Martial, who coolly put the ball past keeper Robin Olsen.

Reflecting back on his team’s performance, Man Utd captain Harry Maguire made the following observation: “It was an excellent performance and we should have been out of sight, we had three or four great chances. We need to be more clinical.”

Manchester United are now set to face their bitter local rivals Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi finals.
