The Cleveland Cavaliers confirmed on Thursday that their forward Dylan Windler is out indefinitely after breaking his hand in the season opener against the Charlotte Hornets.

Windler suffered the injury after driving to the basket and being hit mid-air by the Hornets’ Gordon Hayward in the third quarter. He had three points and two steals before exiting the game.

The Cavs don’t have a timeline for Windler’s return but have announced on social media that the 24-year-old player will be re-evaluated in one week.

The Cavaliers selected Dylan Windler with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft after he had a standout senior season with Belmont. Windler averaged 21.3 points and 10.8 rebounds per game while shooting 42.9 percent from three in the 2018-19 college season.

Windler, however, didn’t get to see the court at all in his first season as a pro, having suffered a leg injury during training camp. He ended up sitting out the entire year, with the organization taking a cautious approach with his recovery.

The Cavs hoped Windler could be an important part of their rotation in 2020-21 after a promising preseason outing, but they will now have to wait a bit longer to see what they got in the Indianapolis-native sharpshooter.
