Los Angeles Chargers might not have to look far in order to find a replacement for departing quarterback Phillip Rivers. According to Chargers’ head coach Anthony Lynn, backup Tyrod Taylor will now get a chance to prove he is worthy of a starting spot.

Taylor signed an $11 million deal with the Chargers in 2019 but hasn’t played much in his first season with the franchise. He only appeared in two games as a relief, passing for 33 yards and one touchdown. Despite giving him the lack of action, Lynn still remains high on the 30-year-old signal-caller.

“Tyrod Taylor is a heck of a quarterback,” said Lynn in a chat with AM 570 LA Sports. “We couldn’t have a better backup right now, and now he has an opportunity to maybe step up into a starting role. I’ve had Tyrod before (in Buffalo), and I know what this young man brings to the table, in the passing game and the running game.”

Lynn especially appreciates the fact that Tylor knows how to take care of the football.

“I believe every year he’s started in this league he’s been the No. 1 quarterback in taking care of the football. … So if we can just take care of the football and take it away, we’ll be OK,” he added.

Chargers are expected to take a look at all options in consideration during their QB search. They currently hold the No.6 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, where they could take Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa or Oregon’s Justin Herbert. There is also a number of free agents that could intrigue Chargers like Teddy Bridgewater or even the great Tom Brady.

Tyrod Taylor previously played with Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, and Cleveland Browns. His last starting job was with the Browns in 2018, when he started the first three games of the season before being benched for the rookie Baker Mayfield.

Taylor, who was Pro Bowler in 2015, has 9,562 career passing yards and 54 TDs. He also rushed for 1,843 yards and 16 touchdowns.
